Following surgery, patients transfer to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) where caregivers monitor their recovery from the immediate effects of surgery and anesthesia. By joining the PACU as a Patient Care Nursing Assistant, you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and observation as needed. This hands-on role requires a present, attentive and patient caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and thrive in a fast-paced environment. On this team, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments within the Cleveland Clinic system.
A caregiver in this position works varying shifts between 7:00AM – 10:30PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfers or emergencies.
Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.
Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height.
Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction, removing urinary foley catheters and other therapeutic measures.
Prepare patients for meals, assist in feeding patients if necessary and distribute water and other nourishments according to patient needs in compliance with physician orders.
Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.
Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge.
Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly.
