Position Description

The School of Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi invites applications for a nine-month tenure track Assistant Professor of Journalism position starting Fall 2025. We seek candidates with expertise in data or computational journalism and/or related areas (e.g., open source investigations, AI and news, data visualization, analytics, etc.). Candidates can approach these issues from a variety of methodological perspectives. The successful candidate will be skillful in research and teaching, and those who also have relevant professional experience are strongly encouraged to apply. 

 

The person hired will teach in the Journalism bachelor’s and/or master’s programs. This faculty member may also serve as chair/advisor for graduate student theses or creative scholarship.

 

Teaching responsibilities may include face-to-face or online courses in journalism, such as data journalism, investigative journalism, reporting, information gathering, as well as other courses in the core curriculum. There will be opportunities to develop courses related to the successful candidate’s areas of expertise and research. 

 

The candidate will be expected to maintain a steady stream of scholarly publications in their area of expertise and to perform service to the school and university.

 
The School of Journalism and New Media offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Journalism and Integrated Marketing Communications. The Journalism program, established in 1947, emphasizes the fundamental print and broadcast skills--writing, reporting, visuals—while constantly evolving to match the dynamic media landscape. Emphases and specializations include social media, sports, graphic design and public relations. With more than 250 majors, the Journalism program also features instructors with decades of real-world experiences in news organizations across the state and the nation. In Spring 2024, the School of Journalism and New Media received a $4 million gift to establish the Jordan Center for Journalism Advocacy and Innovation to promote the preeminence and effectiveness of reliable, relevant, and educational journalism in America.

Position Details

Appointment: 9 Month

Assignment Type: Tenure Track 

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in journalism, mass communication, or a related field. Candidates without a Ph.D. will be considered but will be required to have completed the degree by the time of the position start date.

 

Minimum Requirements:

•    A Ph.D. in journalism, mass communication or related discipline 
•    Demonstrated scholarly productivity 
•    Demonstrated excellence related to teaching 

Minimum qualifications must be met at the time of the position start date.
