Waterfront Staff, Camp Grossman, Summer Day Camp

You want to work at Camp Grossman! Every summer we hire at least 20 Lifeguards, Swim Counselors, and Boating Specialists who are responsible for ensuring our campers learn to swim and enjoy the water in a safe, supportive environment. You will be considered for the position that best matches your skill set and strengths. Camp Grossman offers free camp bus service from over 30+ communities in the Greater Boston area, making it possible for staff to receive transportation from their home communities. This position pays $6,020 for the full regular season, including Orientation. The salary offered will ultimately be determined by the hours employees will work, the scope of the position, the candidate’s relevant experience, and internal equity.  

Orientation takes place the week of June 17th and ends with Visiting Day (a pre-camp visit for all campers and families to meet staff) on Sunday, June 23. The regular camp season begins June 24 and ends August 16 (with the option to work the following “9th Week” for additional pay). The camp day runs from 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with 3 or 4 staff meetings on various Monday afternoons or evenings. Waterfront Staff also work 2 or 3 additional family nights or evening activities, depending on their position. While we prefer staff who can start Orientation Week and work the entire regular season, we are happy to consider quality candidates who may have conflicting obligations. 

Requirements

• Work in partnership with peers and camp leadership to provide a happy, safe, and memorable summer for children 

• Ensure camper safety at all times, both in and out of the water, setting a tone that emphasizes waterfront safety while encouraging fun  
• Teach children about waterfront rules and safety practices 
• May be asked to participate in planning and overseeing some general camp activities 
• Depending on the assignment, additional responsibilities may include: lifeguarding, providing swimming lessons, managing boat equipment, and helping campers develop confidence through mentoring and encouragement 

QUALIFICATIONS 

• Must have completed 10th grade (or equivalent) and be at least 15 years of age  
• Current lifeguarding certificate or willingness and ability to become certified by the start of camp (Camp Grossman will provide training) 
• Thrive in an outdoor setting daily 
• Strong teamwork and relationship-building skills, ability to multitask, manage situations effectively and diplomatically  

• Able to make learning fun 
• Patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor 
• Excellent group management skills 
• Truly enjoys working with children  
• A strong desire to make a difference every day 
• Ability and commitment to build strong relationships with campers, co-workers, and camp leadership  
• For Boating Specialist: proficiency in boating - safety rules and techniques 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

• Able to see, hear, and cognitively recognize situations requiring lifeguarding services 
• Capable of working in a high temperature, sunny, and high humidity environment for extended periods while wearing required personal protective equipment 
• Able to make safety-related decisions and perform CPR and/or first aid, as required 
• Read, write, understand, and speak English 
• Must maintain an appropriate level of fitness in order to competently perform all job-related tasks including the ability to swim distances and dive to swimming area depths, as determined by testing/certification authorities, and to lift 150 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment 
• Must be able to use a computer
