Charlotte Water is an enterprise department of the City of Charlotte and one of the largest public water and sewer service providers in the southeast with over 330,000 customer accounts and over 1100 employees. SALARY:

The salary for this position is $24.00 to $25.74 per hour, commensurate with experience.

JOB SUMMARY

This position supervises assigned crew with the primary responsibility of responding to sewer lateral blockages, sewer main blockages, and manhole inspections. This position responds to more complex issues for assistance, identifies hazards, conducts safety checks, and ensures compliance with safety and City regulations and policies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Leads and supervises utility technicians on jobsite and performs lead, skilled, and semi-skilled tasks related to the repair and maintenance of wastewater collection systems.
  • Utilizes sewer jetters, nozzles, and sewer inspection cameras.
  • Enters and completes work orders in WAM.
  • Identify, knockdown, and report Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs). This includes estimating total gallons spilled, duration, and cause.
  • Assist in remediation process after SSOs.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and issues.
  • Makes decisions regarding private or public sewer issues by referencing city right of ways, easements, and maps.
  • Assigns and reviews work of other team members; trains other personnel; and serves as a competent person on jobsite.
  • Coaches and motivates crew members by communicating needs and expectations through proper training. 
  • Participates and provides input in staffing decisions. Evaluates performance; mentors’ staff; and aids with career development.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Supervises and coordinates work activities of assigned staff; assigns work, monitors status of work, and inspects completed work; participates and provides input in staffing decisions relative to hiring, firing, discipline, and promotional opportunities; evaluates performance; mentors staff; aids with career development, and responsible for completing performing evaluations for assigned staff.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:  

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited school; technical or vocational school preferred. 
  • Three (3) years of related work experience, preferably experience as a utilities technician, and including one (1) year of supervisory experience.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations: 

  • Requires a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must obtain and maintain a City Driver’s Permit.
  • Requires (or obtains within 90 days of hire) a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL – with tanker endorsement).
  • Requires (or obtains within 12 months of hire) Grade I Wastewater Collec
