Job Description

The (Senior) Consulting Director will sit within the Health Sciences Service Line which is part of the larger EH&S practice and will perform professional environmental and health-related consulting services for a wide range of clients including industrial, maritime, commercial, and legal clients. You will develop client business relationships through building trust and open communication and by understanding and responding to the clients' requirements and needs.

The  (Senior) Technical Director will be a thought leader in identifying regulatory or economic or social trends and work with the Health Sciences Service Line Leader and Health Sciences leadership to turn these into business opportunities.

The work requires a professional knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of human and environmental toxicology, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, biological sciences, product stewardship, and environmental science. Also essential is the ability to utilize pertinent aspects of chemistry, biological sciences, public health, and toxicology that pertains to projects related to human and environmental toxicology, biological systems, exposure assessments, product stewardship, and industrial hygiene.

Responsibilites

  • Lead complex scientific consulting projects in toxicology, industrial hygiene, product stewardship, and environmental health, ensuring technical excellence, regulatory compliance, and client satisfaction.
  • Develop and manage strategic client relationships, identifying needs, delivering tailored solutions, and supporting long-term business growth across industrial, legal, and commercial sectors.
  • Identify and respond to emerging trends in science, regulation, and industry to shape new service offerings, drive innovation, and position the firm as a market leader.
  • Collaborate across internal teams—including Health Sciences, EH&S, business development, and marketing—to deliver integrated, cross-disciplinary solutions and support firm-wide initiatives.
  • Mentor and supervise junior and mid-level staff, fostering technical development, project ownership, and a collaborative team culture.
  • Contribute to practice growth and development, including service line strategy, operational planning, and cross-selling opportunities within J.S. Held.
  • Represent the firm externally through participation in professional organizations, conferences, and thought leadership activities to enhance brand visibility and credibility.

Qualifications

  • A Doctorate (Ph.D., Sc.D., DrPH) in Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene, Product Stewardship, Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, Public Health, Environmental Health, or a related scientific or engineering field.
  • 20+ years of progressive experience in environmental health and safety consulting, with a strong focus on human and environmental toxicology, exposure assessment, and regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining long-term client relationships, including key accounts in industrial, legal, or commercial sectors.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary project teams, manage complex projects exceeding $1 million in value, and deliver high-quality, client-focused solutions.
  • Deep knowledge of toxicological risk assessment, industrial hygiene practices, product safety and stewardship, and environmental health sciences.
  • Proficiency in applying principles of chemistry, biology, epidemiology, and public health to real-world consulting challenges.
  • Familiarity with U.S. and international regulatory frameworks (e.g., OSHA, EPA, REACH, TSCA, IARC, WHO) and their application to client projects.
  • Experience in mentoring and supervising junior professionals, fostering technical growth and leadership development.
  • Recognized as a thought leader in the field, with a track record of identifying emerging trends and translating them into business opportunities.
