Salary Compensation: $43,491.74 - $54,418.23

General Description and Classification Standards

Plans, organizes, and implements training programs for employees in assigned department to enhance employee education/skill level or may facilitate and implement safety related training, inspections and programs that enhance the safety and health of employees.

This is an experienced, professional level capable of carrying out most assignments typical of the profession with limited guidance or review. This level would be considered a promotional level and attainable by any incumbent in a work group who demonstrates the necessary knowledge, ability, and performance. Could be the only professional in this specialty in a work group. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.

  • Provide advice and assistance to ensure that an effective Health and Safety Program is implemented to maintain a culture of safety
  • Identify safety resource needs and participate in the development of safety guidelines and related environmental health and safety communications and educational information.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to analyze and identify safety risks and threats to the department, team members, or assets, and escalates appropriately. Displays strong analytical skills, including the ability to gather information, conduct analyses, and present findings.
  • Communicate effectively with managers and employees to address safety concerns and maintain a safe working environment for fleet operations and other DPW areas
  • Build and maintain business relationships internally, as well as with external partners. 
  • Evaluates escalating situations, applies critical thinking, and coordinates effectively with other personnel. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to gather data, compile and assess information and succinctly summarize in written reports.
  • Ensure comprehensive investigations of accidents, injuries, near misses, incidents, and ensure corrective actions
  • Ability to implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Experience completing multiple tasks simultaneously and functioning with minimal supervision.
  • Strong computer skills, including solid skills in the Microsoft Office suite
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned. Responsibilities and duties may change when circumstances dictate (e.g., emergencies, change in workload, rush jobs, or technical developments).

May oversee temporary or contract workers as needed.

  • Knowledge and experience implementing safe work practices, fleet safety programs, DOT, and OSHA requirements
  • Knowledge of applicable safety policies, procedures, standards and regulations pertaining to specific duties and responsibilities of each job.
  • Good Microsoft Office skills.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
  • Good math skills.
  • Ability to stay current with changes in policy, methods, equipment needs, budget and departmental operations.
  • Ability to assemble information and compile reports and documents.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to use A/V aids in presentations.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of employees.

 

Qualifications - External

Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience

  • Completion of Technical or Vocational course study in Safety/Occupational health.
  • 1-year work experience that contains at least 50% of the duties related to safety and/or training.
  • Completion of OSHA 510-Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry and OSHA 511-Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety Management, Industrial Safety, or Fleet Safety.
  • 3-years work experience that contains at least 50% of the duties related to safety and/or training, particularly with fleet operations.
