Collins Aerospace - Pueblo site, is looking for an experienced Senior Engineer, R&D to use their expertise in researching and developing new chemicals and application methods to help extend the life of carbon/ceramic composite brakes for commercial and military aircraft. You should be capable of managing large projects and multiple tasks, as well as defining, identifying and implementing new projects.

  • Position is working onsite at our Pueblo, CO facility

What You Will Do

  • Become the subject matter expert for high temperature Oxidation Protection Systems for carbon-carbon composites.

  • Define, develop, and characterize new carbon materials and processes to meet customer-defined performance requirements for high temperature aircraft brake component and friction applications.

  • Manage multiple R&D projects and project task activities.  Project activities include project plan development, material processing and testing, data collection and analysis, and summarizing information in comprehensive technical reports.

  • Perform hands-on experiments in a laboratory environment  

  • Demonstrate high level of self-initiative and bias for action.

  • Maintain responsibility and accountability for entire task/project.

  • Address problems with multiple variables and unknown solutions.  Demonstrate clear, well thought out logic in proposed approach/solution.

  • Execute projects as a team member with limited oversight/supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and exercise creativity to develop and/or implement practical solutions and patentable materials and processes.

  • Support production and field service-related investigations as needed.

  • Communicate and make technical presentations to senior level leadership

  • Able to travel up to 5% domestically and internationally when circumstances permit

  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience.

  • Experience preparing chemical solutions, compounds, and reagents used in laboratory procedures.

  • Experience conducting tests on materials and other substances to ensure that performance and quality standards are met.

  • Experience writing technical reports that detail methods and findings.

  • U.S. Person – Military contract stipulates the candidates must be U.S. Persons.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Advanced Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Materials Science Engineering with focus on Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Composites and/or Carbon/Carbon Composites.

  • Experience in manufacturing, development and characterization of fiber-reinforced carbon/carbon, ceramic or ceramic matrix composite materials.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, share project progress internally and externally through oral presentations and written reports.

  • Engineering experience in high temperature material characterization and processing including carbon fiber reinforced composites, carbon-carbon, and/or ceramic-matrix composites.

  • Experience with high temperature coatings and inorganic chemistry

  • Working knowledge of high temperature composite material processing equipment and processes including textiles, composite lay-up, carbonization, CVD and CVI, resin and polymer in
