Director of Accounting
AshbyAbout the role
Hi, I’m Shane and I’m the VP of Finance & Operations at Ashby. I started here about a month ago and am excited to bring on our first Director of Accounting! If there is one thing I’ve learned in my FP&A career over the years, it’s that underneath any good financial plan/forecast/model is a robust accounting foundation. In this role, you will join Ashby as our first accounting hire and will be responsible for the entire function. Our business is growing quickly, and it’s imperative that we lay the groundwork for accurate and timely financial reporting, efficient accounting operations, and effective accounting practices and policies.
This role will close on Friday February 2nd at ~5pm ET.
Your initial responsibilities will include:
Transitioning all accounting operations from our outsourced vendor to in-house, ensuring minimal disruption and maintaining accuracy and timeliness.
Ensure precise financial results in accordance with US GAAP. This includes preparing financial reporting and performing flux analyses.
Evolve the chart of accounts. Work with your peers and the Leadership team to stay ahead of reporting needs.
Ensure excellent execution across all functions, including cash management, AP, AR & Billing, G/L, sales tax, and local, state, and federal taxes.
Designing new and assessing existing accounting policies and financial controls.
You should apply if:
You’ve led an accounting function in a SaaS business in a later stage than Ashby is. You’ve seen the complexity of a later stage SaaS business and are excited about getting ahead of those future complexities and challenges. You may have even been through an IPO before.
You value the fundamentals. At the end of the day, a clean set of books, an easy-to-follow process, and solid controls all fill your cup.
You understand the importance of acting like a more mature company before you need to. Ashby isn’t public and hasn’t yet been audited, but that doesn’t matter to you. You are interested in building an outstanding accounting function that will stand the test of time.
You feel motivated by an ERP implementation. We’re on QuickBooks Online but anticipate growing out of it in the future. You’re excited to explore our options, select the right solution, and implement it when the time is right.
Why you shouldn’t apply:
You’ve never managed a team. This role starts out as an IC (team of one with support) but we will make the investments into the team to ensure we’re maintaining accuracy in reporting, compliance, and we continue to be capable of maintaining a world-class process.
You don’t have Revenue Recognition experience. We’re going to rely on you to get the financials right and for our metrics to be sound and dependable. Revenue can get complicated and it’s important you’re experienced and ready for it.
You’re afraid of rolling up your sleeves. If the idea of paying our bills or emailing customers about outstanding invoices feels “beneath you” this job isn’t going to be for you. If the sound of digging into transactions and ensuring proper classification for expenses or building a detailed allocation model sounds like “more junior” work to you, this job isn’t going to be for you.
You’re coming straight out of public accounting. Big 4 experience is a big plus! But you’re building and transitioning an accounting function from outsourced to in-house and that is going to require you to have in-industry experience.
