The Patient Account Specialist (“Specialist”) and all PSA employees must demonstrate an absolute commitment to excellence, respect and delivery of the highest quality patient care. The Patient Account Specialist must maintain all technical standards to meet continuous quality improvement needs, financial and delivery requirements.
Position Summary
The Patient Account Specialist is responsible for managing assigned patient accounts from charge posting through final resolution, with a strong focus on patient financial engagement, office credits, and balance resolution. This role supports both clinic and ASC operations within a high-volume interventional pain management environment with a focus on a positive patient financial experience.

Accounts Receivable & Claims Resolution
- Manage assigned patient accounts to ensure timely and accurate reimbursement
- Review, analyze, and resolve unpaid, underpaid, or denied claims resulting in a patient balance
- Perform payer follow-up via portals, phone calls, and electronic work queues (if applicable)
Office Credits & Patient Financial Support
- Perform cost estimate actions and provide proactive patient outreach for all self-pay accounts and owed balances over $250
- Handle inbound and outbound patient financial calls, as well as calls from clinic and ASC offices
- Complete office-generated financial requests including:
- Moving or reallocating payments between patient accounts
- Assisting with payment batch research and reconciliation
- Verifying patient balances and resolving discrepancies
- Set up and manage patient payment plans in eClinicalWorks (eCW) and HST
- Respond to patient text messages or route inquiries to the appropriate department
- Monitor and return calls from Billing Voicemail
Patient Balance Resolution & Communication
- Review EOBs and patient statements as needed to ensure accurate patient responsibility
- Explain balances, insurance process, and payment options clearly and empathetically
- Facilitate timely resolution of patient balances while maintaining a high level of service
Compliance, Documentation & Productivity
- Maintain compliance with payer contracts, CMS guidelines, and internal policies
- Document all account activity clearly and accurately
- Meet or exceed productivity, aging, and quality benchmarks
- Participate in audits, process improvement initiatives, and cross-training
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• 2+ years of medical AR or patient financial services experience
• Knowledge of commercial and government payers, EOBs, and authorization impacts
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in interventional pain management and/or ASC billing
• Experience with eClinicalWorks (eCW) and HST Pathways
• Familiarity with CPT, modifiers, global periods, and place-of-service rules
