Application and Special Instructions

This is a non-permanent position that will work on an intermittent or seasonal basis.
Individuals in this classification may not exceed 1,300 hours in a 12-month period.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid Certification must be obtained
within 90 days of hire and must be maintained throughout employment in this
position.

INTERVIEW INFORMATION: Highest scoring applicants will be invited to attend an in-person interview to be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, and/or Thursday, March 12, 2026.

ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Therapeutic Senior Recreation Worker position at the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for planning and leading a variety of recreational activities and programs aimed at promoting the physical, social, and emotional well-being of participants with developmental and physical
disabilities.


Work is performed under the supervision of a Therapeutic Recreation Program Coordinator. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains constant and appropriate communication with internal and external stakeholders. Interacts with the public in a positive and helpful manner to provide excellent customer service and foster community relationships.
  • Develops activities based on areas of interest of participants, creating a program that’s fun for all.
  • Facilitates programs during evenings and weekends to accommodate participant schedules, ensuring availability outside standard business hours and adapts to changing schedules throughout the various seasons.
  • Prepares, cleans, and maintains designated areas to support recreational activities and ensure a safe and organized environment.
  • Travels to various program locations as required, ensuring reliable transportation to meet scheduling and logistical needs. Operates city vehicles as required to support program activities and transportation needs.
  • Supports Special Olympics coaching efforts across various sports, including swimming, basketball, bowling, soccer, and track and field, providing guidance and assistance throughout the year.
  • Maintains files, records, and attendance logs of participants.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

This posting is specific to summer hours, which can vary.

Work primarily takes place outdoors and requires moderate to intermediate physical activity, including standing and walking for extended periods of time in warm or hot conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Some High School

Work Experience: Under one (1) year of directly related experience

A valid and unrestricted Arizona Driver License with two (2) years of licensed driving is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous experience volunteering in a recreational setting
Experience working with up to 20 participants aged 5-11 and providing a safe
and fun environment for participants
