About the role

Fastly helps people stay better connected with the things they love. Fastly’s edge cloud platform enables customers to create great digital experiences quickly, securely, and reliably by processing, serving, and securing our customers’ applications as close to their end-users as possible — at the edge of the Internet. The platform is designed to take advantage of the modern internet, to be programmable, and to support agile software development. Fastly’s customers include many of the world’s most prominent companies, including Vimeo, Pinterest, The New York Times, and GitHub.

We're building a more trustworthy Internet. Come join us.

Staff Software Engineer, Edge Delivery Team

The Edge Delivery team maintains Varnish, VCL, and Fastly’s caching platform. Using Rust standards and toolchains, the team develops a high-scale daemon that executes customer configurations and connects to a large and growing variety of Fastly back-end services. The team also maintains CacheD, Fastly’s next-generation object caching infrastructure.

We are looking for a Staff Engineer to join this multifaceted team and help scale our hosting infrastructure. In addition to nuts-and-bolts networking and systems-level work, this role will involve cross-team collaboration, and designing high quality APIs for our customers to use services developed by other teams.

What You'll Do

  • Write Rust code that handles host concerns like back pressure, resource limits, and interactions with other services
  • Collaborate with other teams at Fastly on interfaces to CacheD
  • Design and implement both low- and high-level APIs for interacting with edge services
  • Analyze and address performance and stability issues to meet high scale requirements
  • Support CacheD in production on-call (approx. 1 week every 5 weeks) if clients encounter performance or functionality issues

What We're Looking For

  • Experience with high-reliability systems programming, ideally with some experience in Rust
  • Experience with networking/distributed/cloud systems
  • Comfortable writing asynchronous, concurrent code
  • Pragmatic approach, with a willingness to invest as much energy into maintenance as into new code
  • Interest in mentoring within the team through coaching, delegation, and reviews
  • Formal CS education is not required; demonstrable experience is sufficient

We value a variety of voices, so this is not a laundry list. You’ll be a good candidate if you have experience in SOME of these:

  • Experience with Rust or other systems languages
  • Experience with API design in functional languages
  • Understanding of security concerns in multi-tenant systems
  • Experience with and interest in technical writing
  • Interest in open source contribution

The estimated salary range for this position is $169,000 to $245,000. Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location. This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.

Why Fastly?

  • We have a huge impact. Fastly is a small company with a big reach. Not only do our customers have a tremendous user base, but we also support a growing number of open source projects and initiatives. Outside of code, employees are encouraged to share causes close to their heart with others so we can help lend a supportive hand.
