Sr. Manager / Sr. Counsel - Card Legal Platforms & Technology

Joining Capital One’s Card Legal Team will introduce you to a Fortune 100 company through its largest and most prominent line of business, at the heart of Capital One’s innovation and technology journey.

About the Role:

The Card Legal Team is seeking an attorney to support the Card Product, Platforms and Services teams. The lawyer in this role will advise clients who build and maintain the cutting edge, cloud-based platforms and services that support Capital One’s industry leading credit card business. You’ll help bring innovative digital offerings from ideas to production—analyzing user experience flows and terms, thinking about financial regulations, privacy, and intellectual property, as well as mulling tech contracts, and providing strategic counsel.

A few examples from the Card Product, Platforms and Services Organization include supporting Card’s Marketing and Messaging Platforms, which are a major drivers of customer growth and critical interactions with prospects and customers; supporting Card’s Web and Mobile EASE teams, who build Capital One's award-winning Web, iOS, and Android mobile apps; and supporting Card’s Decisioning Platforms, which enable underwriting decisions for customer acquisitions and management, as well as Capital One credit and debit card authorization decisions.

This position will have responsibility for:

  • Learning Card Product, Platforms and Services’ business objectives, understanding the full landscape and context of the relevant laws, and working through sometimes novel territory as you apply them to platforms involving marketing, rewards, customer acquisitions, and customer servicing;

  • Learning the product specific disclosures and terms for Capital One’s card accounts today, and acting as the primary advisor for those disclosures and terms as our product and the law evolves;

  • Identifying and assessing legal risks associated with Capital One’s consumer credit card business and technological transformation at scale;

  • Counseling on large-scale platform migrations and transformations involving account disclosures and consent capture, rewards, marketing, and customer acquisitions and servicing;

  • Working as part of a collaborative and cross functional team—with Card, Brand, the Business Risk Office, Corporate Communications, and Compliance stakeholders—to address risks, develop creative solutions, and resolve issues.

  • This position will entail regular interactions with senior business partners, Legal Department subject matter experts, and other business attorneys in a fast-paced environment.

Prior experience in financial services or technology isn’t required but the successful candidate will have the following:

  • Top tier smarts and analytical skills

  • Ability to understand complex topics quickly with depth that allows for concise and simple advice

  • Problem solving mentality rather than thinking only like a legal technician

  • Excellent judgment with the ability to predict long-term consequences

  • Growth mindset with an openness to new ideas, diverse perspectives, and unconventional solutions

  • Strong people skills - we’re looking for someone who can build collegial and effective relationships with colleagues and clients

  • Ownership mentality, thinking like an owner vs. an employee.

  • Solid time management skills with the ability to prioritize a significant volume of work and to manage multiple deadlines

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others and write concisely

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar

  • At least 4 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department and/or government agency.

  • 1+ year of experience in financial services

  • 1+ year of experience providing legal counsel on advanced technologies (platforms, products, data, or AI/ML)
