Job Description

The National Wind Technology Center is seeking a graduate intern to design, analyze, and visualize hybrid systems for energy transitions.  This will feature integration across multiple spatial and temporal scales from aerodynamics to electrical dynamics.  The intern will work together with NREL researchers to develop optimization and control strategies as well as visualization capabilities for real-time operation of wind-based hybrid systems.

The intern will use a variety of simulation tools including FLORIS (controls-oriented wake modeling tool), LabView, OpenDSS (grid simulation tool), and virtual reality software.  This researcher is expected to have an interest in controls, optimization, and visualization as well as general knowledge of renewable energy related disciplines and applications.

The successful candidate will have excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate will be expected to help results in a technical journal/conference proceedings.

This is expected to be a remote internship from within the United States. The internship must start during or before March 2025.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.
