About the role

Job Description Summary

We are looking for a Senior Lead Protection Engineer to work in our Tampere based engineering Center of Excellence for FACTS (STATCOM & SVC) solutions. The role focuses on leading the design, setting, validation, and testing of protection systems for medium voltage and high voltage applications that enable reliable operation of modern power grids.
You will combine deep protection expertise with system level understanding to deliver robust solutions that support grid stability and the ongoing energy transition. In this role, you will also provide technical leadership across projects, support tendering and standardization activities, and guide other engineers through reviews, coaching, and technical decision-making.

Job Description

This role is suited for an experienced engineer with a strong background in protection engineering and in designing protection systems that enable stable and reliable operation of modern medium voltage and high voltage grids. It involves translating system level understanding into robust, selective, and testable protection schemes, with technical ownership from concept through commissioning.

The role requires both strong hands-on technical capability and the ability to lead protection design activities across project phases. The ideal candidate is curious, self driven, and motivated to continuously develop expertise in protection relays, tools, and evolving grid technologies, while also supporting the development of colleagues, standard solutions, and engineering quality.

What You Will Do

As part of a skilled and supportive protection engineering team, you will:

• Lead the design of protection concepts for FACTS applications for medium voltage and high voltage substations
• Calculate, validate, and approve protection settings based on:
o Short circuit studies
o Equipment characteristics
o Grid topology and operational philosophy
• Configure, review, and test protection relays from multiple manufacturers
• Analyze fault behavior and define appropriate protection functions, coordination, and design philosophy
• Produce, review, and approve high quality technical documentation
• Plan and participate in:
o Factory acceptance testing (FAT)
o Site testing and commissioning support
• Validate protection clause by clause analysis in tender projects
• keeping documentation supporting tender projects up to date

• Provide comments and technical input in technical validation meetings regarding clause by clause, deviations, clarifications, and division of responsibility
• Act as a technical leader in discussions and negotiations with customers, project teams, suppliers, and other stakeholders
• Collaborate closely with regional teams to ensure seamless design execution and fit-for-purpose solutions for projects
• Support new product introduction and standardization activities with protection expertise
• Participate in standard solution and regional reference solution development, and lead actions related to protection system design
• Implement lessons learned and continuous improvement from projects into tender projects and standard solutions
• Share knowledge and coach other engineers through verbal and written guidance, technical reviews, and approval processes
• Contribute to commissioning of FACTS equipment (STATCOM, SVC)

What We Offer

• Work in an engineering Center of Excellence for FACTS technologies (STATCOM & SVC)
• A senior technical role with the opportunity to influence protection design practices, standard solutions, and engineering quality
• Exposure to real world protection challenges in grid connected power electronic systems
• Opportunities for technical growth, specialization, and career development
• Collaboration with international project teams, regional teams, and other global CoEs
• Flexible working hours and benefits of a large global company
• A role based in Tampere, one of Finland’s most attractive cities

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering / Power Systems
• Strong understanding of power system protection principles
• Solid experience in protection engineering for medium voltage and/or high voltage applications
• Knowledge of:
o Medium voltage systems
o High voltage systems
o Fault current behaviour and short circuit calculations
o Core protection functions (overcurrent, earth fault, differential)
• Experience in designing, reviewing, and validating protection schemes and settings

• Hands on experience with protection relay configuration, testing, and commissioning
• Experience in reviewing and approving technical studies, specifications, and design documentation
• Experience supporting tendering activities
