About the role

Summary:

We're looking for a Staff Product Designer to own critical design infrastructure and customer experience documentation at Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company. In this role, you'll complete and maintain journey maps across our insurance products, contribute to our design system evolution, and develop a deep understanding of our business to inform strategic design decisions. This is a unique opportunity to shape how we document and understand customer experiences while building foundational design systems that enable the entire product team.

You'll work in a collaborative environment where designers are embedded in product squads, with the flexibility to work across multiple product areas and contribute to design practice initiatives that elevate our entire organization.

What You'll Do

Design System Leadership

  • You'll lead the build-out and maintenance of our design system based on HeroUI, leading our design system guild and system evolution.
  • Establish design system foundation by adapting HeroUI components to Jewelers Mutual's specific needs and brand requirements, leveraging token systems.
  • Build designer buy-in through collaborative component design, demonstrating value through real product work, and incorporating feedback into system decisions.
  • Gain adoption by partnering with squads to implement components with proper documentation and usage guidelines.
  • Create adoption strategy that balances immediate product needs with long-term system consistency.
  • Document implementation patterns that help both designers and developers use the system effectively.
  • Comfort bridging design and development - working fluently with Figma tokens and primitives while translating design decisions into developer-friendly documentation.
  • Champion the value proposition of the design system across teams - showing how it accelerates delivery and improves consistency.
  • Navigate resistance by understanding team constraints and finding pragmatic paths to adoption.
  • Establish feedback loops between product teams and design system work to ensure the system serves real needs.
  • Guide guild discussions on component standards, patterns, and governance decisions.
  • Facilitate design system reviews and approve component implementations.
  • Create and maintain design system roadmap aligned with product strategy.
  • Mentor designers on design system usage and best practices.

Journey Mapping & Customer Experience Documentation

      • Your secondary focus will be creating and maintaining comprehensive journey maps that inform our product strategy.
      • Complete journey maps for 7-8 priority product areas using established methodology and quality standards.
      • Maintain existing journey maps as products and experiences evolve, ensuring documentation stays current and actionable.
      • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Prod. Design, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Research, and Customer Success to validate journey accuracy.
      • Identify friction points and opportunities through journey analysis, surfacing insights that inform product strategy.
      • Establish sustainable processes for ongoing journey map maintenance that scale beyond initial creation.
      • Document patterns and insights that emerge across multiple customer journeys.
      • Partnering with UX Researcher, Consumer Research and Behavior Analytics to ensure data is leveraged.
      • Present journey findings to stakeholders and leadership teams.
      • Journey mapping and design system work should inform each other. Applying systems thinking to both.

      Business & Product Understanding

      • Develop deep knowledge of insurance products, customer segments, and business model.
      • Understand end-to-end experiences across consumer insurance, jeweler partnerships, claims, and specialized products.
      • Build relationships across product teams to understand roadmaps and strategic priorities.
      • Connect customer experience insights to business outcomes (revenue, retention, efficiency).
      • Support strategic initiatives with customer experience perspective when needed.

      What You'll Bring

      • 6-8+ years of product design experience with strong portfolio demonstrating depth of understanding.
      • Proven experience creating journey maps or service design deliverables that influenced product decisions.
      • Systems thinking ability - can see patterns across experiences and connect dots between touchpoints.
      • Synthesis skills - comfortable interviewing stakeholders, leveraging data, and synthesizing insights.
