Position Overview:

The Math/Stats Skills Center (MSSC) provides both a physical space and a community, built to support Carleton students taking courses in math or statistics in which they would benefit from additional assistance, focusing on students taking introductory courses in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The primary responsibility of the Director of the Math/Stats Skills Center is to direct that support. The Director also regularly teaches classes in math and/or statistics. The Director's role includes responsibility in enhancing the teaching and learning of math and statistics and encouraging innovative use of learning and teaching pedagogies and technologies. The work of the Director will involve close collaboration with the Quantitative Resource Center (QRC) and the Academic Support Center (ASC) and their directors, as well as close collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

On a pilot basis, the Director will report to the Provost's Office, via the Associate Provost responsible for oversight of the curriculum. (This reporting line will be reassessed in 2027, after an initial two-year trial period).

Working Schedule:

This position is a 0.83 FTE exempt, benefit-eligible staff position (40 hours per week during the academic terms, plus an average of 13.3 hours per week for December, July, and August). This Director will also hold faculty rank, enabling them to serve as an instructor of record.

Compensation:

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $71,600 and $74,000. The salary range has been prorated based on the part-time nature of this position. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

• Direct the day-to-day operations of the Math/Stats Skills Center (MSSC):

  • With community input, develop, modify, and implement programs and services.

  • Set policies, procedures, and practices for use of the MSSC as a welcoming place for all.

  • Serve as the supervisor for the MSSC's student workers (tutors and lab assistants), including managing their hiring training, ongoing professional development, and evaluation.

  • Develop and enhance MSSC programming to support specific student populations on campus with identified, underserved support needs, in consultation with other offices and programs (e.g., TRIO, FOCUS, CUBE, the Math/Stats department).

  • Coordinate, in collaboration with faculty in the Math/Stats department, the programming in the MSSC to align with the department's curriculum.

• Teach 1–2 sections of relevant courses (typically alternating between calculus and introductory statistics) each academic year, with the courses and schedule selected in consultation with the Associate Provost based on the curricular needs of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

• Collaborate with the Director of the QRC (and, as appropriate, the Director of the ASC) on matters of shared concern:

  • Evaluate and, where valuable, maintain or extend shared processes for recruiting, selecting, training, and scheduling relevant student peer-support employees.

  • Design, implement, and maintain a coherent outreach and communication strategy to help students and their faculty know where students should go for what kinds of support (i.e., QRC vs. MSSC).

• Identify trends and stay informed about current research in mathematics/statistics education; modify MSSC operations in response to assessment, campus requests, and current literature.

• Administer the operating budget for the MSSC.

• Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Skills: 

Required:

• Masters degree in mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field.

• Experience teaching college-level courses in mathematics or statistics.

• Experience in a mathematics or statistics tutoring setting.

• Demonstrated knowledge of mathematical and statistical pedagogy.
