DATA CENTERS & MISSION CRITICAL PROJECTS
*This position can be remote (work from home) but must live near a major airport.
* Up to 50% overnight travel
Position Overview
The SKAE JLL Data Center Commissioning Group is looking for an experienced Mechanical and Controls Commissioning Engineer to join our growing team in support of our expanding portfolio of mission critical projects in the US (and Canada). Your home location is flexible, and remote work is an option for the right candidate. Must be willing and able to travel overnight in support of projects up to 50% of the calendar year.
In this critical role you will lead comprehensive mechanical and controls systems commissioning for small, medium and hyperscale data center projects, colocation facilities, and mission-critical infrastructure with projects ranging from 1MW to 100MW+. You will drive technical excellence and exceptional project delivery as both the lead hands-on mechanical commissioning engineer and represent SKAE JLL as a strategic project leader, ensuring seamless integration of complex mechanical and controls systems in high-stakes environments where downtime is not an option.
Key Responsibilities
Help develop detailed commissioning proposals and scope documents based on client RFPs, design drawings, and specifications. Lead pre-commissioning planning sessions with stakeholders to establish testing protocols, acceptance criteria, and project milestones. Manage, perform and document holistic (Level 0 – Level 6) factory and onsite commissioning activities for the mechanical and control systems infrastructure.
Technical Commissioning Execution
Execute comprehensive commissioning of mission-critical systems including CRAH units, chilled water plants, central cooling plants, dry coolers, liquid cooling systems and advanced server rack containment strategies and associated controls and monitoring systems.
Quality Assurance & Documentation
Develop system and equipment specific functional performance tests and integrated systems testing protocols. Create detailed commissioning plans, test procedures, and comprehensive final reports meeting industry standards (ASHRAE Guideline 0 or similar). Document deficiencies using structured tracking systems and oversee resolution through substantial completion.
Team Leadership & Stakeholder Management
Help direct cross-functional commissioning teams of 2-8+ commissioning engineers and technicians. Coordinate with project stakeholders (design engineers, contractors, facility operators, and client representatives) throughout the project lifecycle from the design phase through transition to operations. On our larger projects you will also conduct commissioning training for Owner’s operations staff and provide knowledge transfer documentation.
Required Qualifications
Experience & Technical Expertise
- Minimum 7 years of documented experience in leading the hands-on data center commissioning activities with at least 5 years specifically in data center cooling systems and building monitoring and automation commissioning.
- Proven track record leading the mechanical and controls commissioning of facilities with power densities exceeding 25kW per rack.
- Deep understanding of cooling plant sequences of operations and redundancy concepts, as well as their implementation in mission critical designs.
- Experience working in partnership with major cooling equipment manufacturers (JCI, Daiken, Trane, Vertiv, Schneider, etc)
- Proficiency in the use of commissioning management software platforms (CxAlloy, ACC, Procore, Bluebeam, and similar platforms)
Systems Knowledge
- Advanced knowledge of commissioning processes for data center cooling infrastructure and building monitoring and controls platforms.
- Expertise in precision HVAC systems, glycol cooling, and thermal management strategies including liquid cooling applications.
- Strong understanding of BAS/DCIM integration, monitoring protocols, and alarm management
