About the role

Description

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (FNP or PNP)/Physician Assistant for our neuro-oncology service.  This position will help bridge the gap of inpatient and outpatient care for neuro-oncology patients; assist with transition from inpatient acute care to short-term and long-term outpatient management. 

The NP/PA will assist physician with treatment plans, lab and chemo orders, respond to incoming phone messages from patient and make call backs to patient reporting response to attending physician.  The NP/PA will see new and follow up inpatient consults in addition to follow up outpatient appointments.  The NP/PA will make referrals to other healthcare providers and/or consult the physician for further definitive therapy; order and evaluate appropriate non-invasive diagnostic tests and procedures.  The NP/PA will instruct and counsel patients on health care, health maintenance, medical problems, treatment plans, nutrition or other related issues as appropriate. 

  • Participates as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide continuity of care throughout various stages of treatment and follow-up.
  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to patients and families according to established collaborative protocols and standards of care.
  • Performs physical examinations and provides preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines and appropriate to patient needs.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate lab and diagnostic tests to assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs.
  • Based on outcome of diagnostic, lab, and physical assessment findings, arranges for appropriate plan of care and follow-up.
  • Records pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
  • Maintains interdisciplinary approach to planning and communicating patient care information by discussing patient data with appropriate physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Evaluates outcomes of patient care and makes necessary revisions in care plan.
  • Seeks and provides consultative services as required.
  • Through patient education and counseling, incorporates the concepts of health maintenance, prevention, and promotion into daily practice.
  • Demonstrates awareness of community resources and assists staff, patients, and families to effectively utilize them.
  • Identifies own learning needs and assumes responsibility for maintaining current knowledge and competency in clinical practice area.
  • Educates patients, families, and professionals through the development of educational materials, in-services, formal lectures, and/or publications.  Participate in support group, coordinate caregiver support.
  • Participates in the quality assessment/improvement program for the service.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Nurse Practitioner:  Masters degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Nursing.  Licensed as Nurse Practitioner in New York State.  Excellent communication skills (both oral & written), interpersonal and organization skills are required.  Basic computer skills required.

Physician Assistant:  Bachelors Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) from an accredited Physician assistant (PA) school, current license and certificate to practice as a Physician Assistant (PA).  Excellent communication skills (both oral & written), interpersonal and organization skills are required.  Basic computer skills required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience treating and managing oncology patients.  Experience working in a fast paced, high volume inpatient environment.  Experience using EMR.
