Job Summary

The Senior Staff Accountant, Accounts Payable oversees the full AP cycle. The individual is responsible for managing a high volume of incoming invoices, focused on timely vendor payments, ongoing process improvements, and strong internal controls. Additionally, the Senior Staff Accountant will be utilized for ad-hoc accounting projects and ongoing, standard monthly accounting processes as requested by the Controller. Examples include monthly reconciliations, ensuring tax compliance (e.g., use tax for equipment and machinery), capital lease accounting, supporting month-end close, and mentoring staff, all while ensuring accurate system entries into the ERP system for payables and inventory-related transactions.

 

Essential Duties


Serve as the company expert for all things related to accounts payable at Mesa.
Invoice Processing: Oversee high-volume invoice processing, matching invoices to Purchase Orders (POs) and receiving documents, coding to appropriate G/L accounts, and ensuring proper approval workflows.
Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve processes and implement automation to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Reporting & Controls: Prepare AP aging reports, analyze Days Payable Outstanding (DPO), support month/year-end close, and ensure adherence to internal controls.
Team Leadership: Mentor and train junior AP staff, delegate tasks, and manage team performance, fostering continuous improvement.
Cross-Department Communications: Function as a strategic business partner by collaborating and communicating with departments outside Accounting.
Audit Support: Provide documentation and support for external audits.
System Expertise: Manage AP functions within the company's ERP system, potentially supporting system upgrades or migrations.
Assist Controller with ad-hoc accounting projects and standard monthly accounting processes.

QualificationsEducationRequired


4 Year / Bachelors Degree in Accounting from an accredited university.


 

ExperienceRequired


3 years of Accounting experience.


Preferred


5 years of Accounting experience.
Honorably discharged service veterans are preferred.


 

Certifications, Licenses & RegistrationsRequired


CPA


 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


Strong knowledge and understanding of accounting principles and standard monthly closing procedures.
Mastery of U.S. GAAP specifically as it applies to capital versus expense and AP accounting.
Proficient in Excel and accounting software systems, with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Effective written and verbal communication skills for interfacing with all internal and external stakeholders.
Serve as the subject matter expert for all accounts payable matters at Mesa.
Manage multiple simultaneous deadlines, such as month-end close, audit support, tax filings, and internal process improvement deadlines.
Support the Controller by contributing to ad-hoc projects and monthly accounting activities as needed.
Maintain up-to-date documentation and records to support audits, compliance reviews, and strategic decision-making.
Utilize critical thinking to examine assumptions and identify anomalies in sometimes messy, incomplete data.
Balance being a strong technical expert with being a trusted leader of your team.
Must be able to fluently speak, write, and read in English.
