Field Engineer - CENG, Central Gas Engineering (Mechanical/Chemical)

The Field Engineer supports LNG plant and gas facility projects through a combination of field execution support and office-based engineering activities. The role includes performing field investigations, verifying existing conditions, supporting design implementation, reviewing contractor work for compliance with approved drawings, specifications, Company standards, safety requirements, and applicable codes, and assisting with technical issue resolution during construction, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and emergency response activities. Office-based responsibilities include preparing and reviewing field reports, work packages, RFIs, submittals, project documentation, technical evaluations, construction and outage planning documents, closeout records, and correspondence required to support procurement, construction, operational readiness, and safe project execution. The role requires close coordination with Engineering, Operations, Construction, Purchasing, contractors, consultants, and plant personnel to support reliable, code-compliant, and timely execution of LNG plant projects and related gas infrastructure work.
Core Responsibilities- Manage end-to-end project execution, including design review, bid preparation and evaluation, budgeting and appropriations, scheduling, construction oversight, and commissioning.
- Develop and review design packages (specifications and drawings), evaluate contractor shop drawings, and perform cost-benefit analyses and conceptual studies to determine optimal designs.
- Prepare and manage project budgets and appropriation requests, perform engineering calculations, and coordinate the work of consultants, technicians, and designers.
- Ensure compliance with Company Safety, Health, and Environmental programs, promoting safe work practices and environmental protection in accordance with policy and regulations.
- Provide technical and operational support to Gas Engineering, Operations, Purchasing, and Construction teams for procurement and project execution.
- Supervise internal and external design efforts, ensuring quality and adherence to standards.
- Respond to field emergencies and equipment failures on a 24/7 basis, providing direct technical support as needed.
- Travel to various Con Edison sites to deliver engineering support and oversee project activities.
- Offer technical expertise and consultation within the Company and industry in areas of specialization.
- Perform field walkdowns and verify existing conditions against drawings, specifications, P&IDs, equipment layouts, and construction work packages; identify conflicts, constructability issues, and field deviations before and during execution.
- Monitor contractor work for compliance with approved drawings, specifications, permits, Company standards, safety requirements, and applicable codes; document deficiencies and support corrective action through resolution.
- Review and support resolution of RFIs, submittals, field change requests, nonconformance reports, and as-built markups while ensuring changes are technically justified, documented, and approved before implementation.
- Support construction readiness, outage planning, work sequencing, lockout/tagout coordination, permit planning, material readiness, and pre-job briefings to reduce execution risk and minimize operational impacts.
- Support inspection, testing, commissioning, startup, punch-list resolution, turnover documentation, and closeout of completed work packages.
- Prepare clear field reports, meeting notes, photo logs, inspection records, issue logs, and action-item trackers to communicate field progress, risks, and required decisions.
- Perform additional related tasks and assignments as required to support departmental objectives.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and 3 years of engineering work experience in the gas or power generation industries. or
- Master's Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and 3 years of engineering work experience in the gas or power generation industries.
- Master's Degree in Engineering and 3 years of engineering work experience in the gas or power generation industries.
- Thorough knowledge of gas systems or power generation equipment, required.
- Strong understanding of utility industry safety standards and process safety measures, required.
- Ability to develop in-depth expertise in Company codes, standards, procedures, and specifications related to LNG plant design and compressor station systems, required.
