About the role

Reporting to the Casualty RLM, Specialty Insurance Americas who reports to the Casualty GLH, Special Casualty Worldwide.  This casualty underwriter will be involved in the review and underwriting of Excess Casualty business, including underwriting quality, appetite guidance and overall execution of the Excess Casualty lines for large Energy, Non-Energy and construction risks.  The underwriter will utilize several paper companies for admitted, non-admitted and reinsurance companies.  This position completes a team of existing underwriters writing Excess Casualty business in the Americas.  Our clients include Fortune 500 companies and others in vast and varying industries.  The Underwriter will have a level of Casualty underwriting authority and is accountable for underwriting decisions on our largest and most complex accounts.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Submissions and Underwriting Process

  • Review new and renewal submissions, ensuring accuracy and adequacy of data; evaluate risk and account quality, including exposures and loss potentials; price accounts using SCOR’s pricing models as necessary; and determine acceptable underwriting terms and conditions.
  • Prepare clear and concise underwriting information for use in case of referrals. 
  • Communicate quotations, authorizations, declinations, and binders to the broker/client and handle negotiations and changes on the account.
  • Evaluate claims in cooperation with the claims department.
  • Ensure necessary paperwork is accurate and issued, and maintain complete underwriting files.

 

Risk Assessment and Analysis

  • Conduct thorough risk assessments and analyses to determine the viability and profitability of potential reinsurance treaties.
  • Utilize advanced analytical tools and techniques to assess risk exposure and develop appropriate pricing strategies.
  • Monitor and analyze industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions to inform underwriting decisions.

 

Client and Broker Relations

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and brokers to facilitate effective communication and negotiation.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by addressing client inquiries and concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Collaborate with brokers to develop tailored reinsurance solutions that meet client needs and objectives.

 

Team Collaboration and Development

  • Work closely with other underwriters, actuaries, and claims professionals to ensure a cohesive approach to underwriting and risk management.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of underwriting strategies and best practices.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • 7+ years experience in primary casualty or excess casualty underwriting (2+ years Excess Casualty minimum)
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with proficiency in underwriting software and pricing models.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with clients and brokers.
  • Proficient PC Skills - Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Knowledge of industry regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Brokerage and/or direct insurance experience.

“Pay Range for roles performed in New York: $160,000-$190,000 base salary per year. Actual salaries may vary based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, role and performance. The range listed is just one component of SCOR's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, short- and long-term incentives.
