About the role
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.
The design engineer contractor will be a support role to the SPARC design team and offer support in the design of SPARC components by applying multi-discipline technical and engineering skills and communicating to various internal groups and to potential vendors. We are hiring junior engineers or college engineering students with zero to three years experience.
This is a full time, 3-6 month position.

The design engineer contractor will be a support role to the SPARC design team and offer support in the design of SPARC components by applying multi-discipline technical and engineering skills and communicating to various internal groups and to potential vendors. This is a full time, 3-6 month position.
This team member will:
- Support design leads with the design of SPARC superconducting magnets
- Work with the design team to create SPARC part numbers and populate with relevant quality and technical information
- Get critical information from vendors related to vendor part quality and technical data to inform purchasing decisions made by design engineering leads
- Be the liaison between design engineering and procurement to expedite communication on critical procurements
- Communicate with R&D, manufacturing, and CFS materials team to gather information on quantities required, manufacturability of vendor parts, and material specifications Other tasks as directed by the design team and within the capability of the hired individual (could include preparing some information for upcoming design reviews, some analysis, and some modeling)
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:
- Pursuing bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace engineering, Physics, or another relevant field
- Produce design concepts using NX
- Perform thermal, fluid, structural, and electromagnetic analysis of SPARC magnets, including conductors, insulation, joints, supports, fluid manifolds, insulator breaks, and inform design decisions using COMSOL and ANSYS
- Develop design notes, technical specifications, assembly procedures and documentation necessary to manufacture and install the SPARC superconducting magnets and their embedded and supporting systems
Additional experience and/or qualifications:
- CAD (e.g. NX, Solidworks) and analysis (COMSOL, ANSYS) experience
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
- Perform activities such as stooping, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
- Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
- Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
