Pay Range

$172,140 - $265,188 Annually

$172,140 - $221,064 Annually for the SEL.3 level

$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level

Job Description

We have an opening for a Deputy Associate Program Leader in the Nuclear Materials Program for Surveillance, Fabrication and Offsite Operations. You will provide leadership for a team that performs machining, inspection, and assembly operations in the LLNL Superblock nuclear facility and additionally at Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). You will also lead the team in developing and implementing next-generation nuclear materials manufacturing equipment and processes for LLNL programs. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), in support of the Nuclear Materials (NM) Program within the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Principal Directorate.

Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Lead the development, management, and execution of work for Nuclear Materials programmatic projects, providing guidance to ensure the science and technical efficacy of the group, while also supporting the accomplishment of project/program goals and objectives. 
  • Provide technical, safety, and security leadership to a diverse set of manufacturing operations within the Superblock and NNSS, ensuring team compliance with all safety and operational standards, while also making certain that safety related Laboratory and Directorate policies are understood, applied, and followed.
  • Monitor performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables, communicate program requirements in an effective and timely manner, respond to unexpected operational setbacks, and lead and advise on corrective actions when necessary.
  • Collaborate with Nuclear Materials Technology Program (NMTP) programmatic engineers and project principals in defining work objectives, conducting comprehensive and complex design reviews, and in providing expert technical engineering and electrical support and analysis while applying advanced knowledge and using innovative methods/technology where applicable.
  • Represent the program alongside the Associate Program Leader in developing budgets, tracking costs and market capabilities, communicating with various stakeholders internal and external to the laboratory, while ensuring desired results and deadlines are met.
  • Guide workload planning for multiple projects among group members, assigning work and remaining cognizant of the complex technical goals, problems, solutions, and progress of group projects.
  • Interact with program engineers and scientists, DOE staff, operations personnel, and with mid-level management outside and within the Laboratory
  • Travel up to 50% time to LANL and NNSS to oversee and coordinate LLNL activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level

  • Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers, including making recommendations and providing strategic technical advice.
  • May develop new ideas, modify approaches, and/or redefine requirements that impact organizational operations or directions.
  • Mentor staff across the organization, including other mentors.
  • Serve as subject matter expert and organizational spokesperson to Laboratory management and/or external advisor to sponsors.
