Director, General Surgery Residency Program
Vanderbilt University School of MedicineAbout the role
Description
The Department of Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) seeks a Director for its General Surgery Residency Program.
The VUMC Surgical Residency is considered one of the top training programs in the United States with a long tradition of clinical, academic, and educational excellence. The program was founded nearly one hundred years ago in 1925 under the leadership of then Chair of Surgery Dr. Barney Brooks. Alfred Blalock was the first resident. Graduates of the program have gone on to make major impacts in surgery across the United States. Current Chiefs are trained to be leaders in their field of choice. The typical Vanderbilt Surgery Resident spends two years during the program performing research, and many get advanced degrees or training during this period in diverse areas including Bioinformatics, Public Health, or Engineering. Trainees typically continue to a top fellowship. The program currently supports 64 categorical residents and has eight graduating residents each year.
The successful applicant will be able to build on past success and train the next generation of surgical leaders. Under the leadership of Dr. Christina Bailey, the program has attained its highest national visibility and is one of the top programs in the nation. Educational efforts in the Department have the strongest possible institutional support. The Program Director will be responsible for maintaining compliance with and ideally exceeding expectations set forth by the ACGME for the program and by the ABS for the individual graduates.
The new director will be expected to devote 30-50% of their effort, fully supported, to the Program. Academic rank and potential tenure will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
VUMC is one of the premier academic medical centers in the United States. The main hospital has 1,091 beds, and the Vanderbilt Health System consists of five regional campuses, including seven hospitals with over 1,700 total inpatient beds. We are amid a major expansion that will add approximately 200 beds in 2025. Between VUMC and Vanderbilt University, significant resources exist to support research including an NIH-funded Clinical Translational Science Award which supports more than 3,000 clinical research projects. In addition, VUMC is home to world class genetics and genomics resources, internationally renowned bioinformatics, and the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering, which facilitates multidisciplinary collaboration between the School of Engineering and the Section of Surgical Sciences.
Located in Nashville, Tennessee, VUMC is a hub of patient care, discovery, and teaching. Our community of individuals come together each day to change the world. We actively seek diversity of culture, thinking, learning, and leading. VUMC’s mission is to advance health and wellness through preeminent programs in patient care, education, and research.
