POSITION: Bailiff
DEPARTMENT: Court Administration/Magistrate
WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., M-F
STATUS: Full-time
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

Incumbent serves as Bailiff for Court Administration/Magistrate, responsible for performing clerical duties, maintaining court security, and assisting the public.
DUTIES:
Assists with initial hearings, including preparing orders, completing waiver forms, and forwarding list of related jail summonses to Prosecutor.
Performs clerical duties as assigned or as needed, including typing orders and correspondence for Judge, and scheduling weddings as requested.
Maintains courtroom security, including checking alarms prior to hearings, ensuring no unauthorized persons are present, and notifying Sheriff's Deputies as needed.
Answers telephone and greets office visitors, including determining purpose of call/visit, responding to inquiries, and forwarding/directing to appropriate courtroom, individual or department. Checks in parties for court.
Performs various duties related to the organization and administration of night court, including retrieving, preparing, and organizing files for cases scheduled for night court, ensuring all cases have appropriate entries and forms, and coordinating litigants, court officers, and other personnel in various procedures and multiple courtrooms.
Periodically assists in preparing and processing department claims/vouchers, including verifying costs and documentation, completing, copying and submitting forms.
Periodically performs duties of Court Reporter in his/her absence.
Performs related duties as assigned.
I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
High school diploma or GED. Clerical experience in a court/legal environment preferred.
Working knowledge of standard office and court policies, procedures, legal requirements and terminology, and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated tasks.
Ability to type with speed and accuracy, and properly operate a variety of standard office equipment, including computer, printer, telephone, copier, calculator, and fax machine.
Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, often under time pressure, and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions. Ability to maintain organization while handling tasks.
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information/records according to state requirements.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and appropriately respond to constructive criticism.
Ability to work with others in a team environment, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers.
Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.
Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to regularly work evening, weekend and/or extended hours.
