What You Will Do

Position Summary:

As a Principal Data Engineer on Stryker's Finance Data Science and Engineering team, you will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with pioneers and thought leaders in financial analytics. This role propels you to the forefront of data management innovation, where you'll build sophisticated ETL pipelines designed to seamlessly transport data from intricate source systems directly to pivotal end products. Your efforts will enhance our ability to process, analyze, and leverage vast arrays of financial data with unmatched precision and efficiency. By working closely with our Data Science team, you'll contribute to the rapid development cycles that drive our groundbreaking financial analytics tools and applications, playing a significant role in supporting various strategic decisions that have a direct impact on Stryker's global operations.

In this role, you'll have the opportunity to leverage your specialized skills across a spectrum of advanced technology platforms, from cloud-based infrastructures to complex data integration frameworks and AI/ML applications. You will not only master the art of data transformation but also play a critical role in shaping the future of financial analytics at Stryker. Your work will cross the boundaries of traditional data engineering, touching upon areas as diverse as risk assessment, inventory optimization, and operational efficiency.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable and robust ETL pipelines to facilitate the efficient transfer of data from various source systems to analytical platforms.

  • Work closely with data scientists and analysts to understand their data requirements and build systems that enable easy access to key data, fostering innovation in data utilization.

  • Explore and integrate new data sources that can provide additional insights into financial trends and patterns, enhancing our overall analytical capabilities.

  • Ensure the integrity and security of financial data throughout the pipeline, from extraction to end use in products and decision-making tools.

  • Partner with other teams within the finance organization and external teams such as Information Technology (IT) on strategic projects. 

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior data engineers, guiding them in best practices and innovative approaches to complex data engineering challenges.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, data analytics, mathematics, statistics, data science or related field with applicable data engineering & architecture work experience.

  • 8+ years of work experience required.

  • Master's Degree or PhD in Computer Science or quantitative discipline preferred.

Qualifications & experience:

  • Experience leading peers through end-to-end data engineering & architecture projects: from problem and requirements definition to architecture validation and deployment

  • Advanced skills in data modeling and storage of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.

  • Advanced proficiency in at least one programming language central to Data Engineering (e.g. SQL/Python/Spark) or skilled in multiple languages.

  • Advanced skills in optimizing workflows, pipelines, and algorithms.

  • Expert/Master in ETL/ELT, pipeline creation, orchestration, & data store/warehouse/systems architecture.

  • Experienced/advanced working knowledge of cloud-based native tools such as data storage, distributed computing, business intelligence (Power BI, Apache Spark, Azure, AWS etc.)

  • Experience with cloud-native distributed computing tools such as Databricks and Apache Spark.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, and commitment to achieving project goals.
