About the role:

We are seeking an outstanding Senior Automation Engineer to join our Consumable Products Development (CPD) Group at 10x Genomics. This is a key position for the commercialization of consumable products associated with Next Generation Sequencing chemistries. This candidate will be responsible for developing and integrating automation solutions into the 10x manufacturing of complex reagents.  This is a multi-disciplinary position that will work closely with Product Development, Process Development, Manufacturing and R&D teams to assure 10x implements world class automation solutions.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of success as a laboratory automation engineer and have knowledge of deploying, troubleshooting and optimizing liquid handling equipment utilized in a biotech manufacturing or quality control process ideally in a med/tech environment. They will have experience driving solutions to equipment based operational problems and implementing continuous improvements on systems. Specifically, the must have the “hands-on” knowledge and experience with optimization of liquid handling equipment, experience programming in multiple languages.

 

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Coordinate and execute activities concerned with development, modification and maintenance of liquid handling systems, robotic arms, and or other laboratory style automation equipment.

  • Drive development of liquid handling automation for 10x Genomics consumables manufacturing line.

  • Be a subject matter expert to advise vendors and management about product specifications and equipment capabilities.

  • Advise on maintenance policies for production equipment and develop parts programs to support those activities.

  • Optimize liquid handling systems and integrations with regard to safety, environment, cost, quality and regulatory requirements.

  • Provide the necessary technical expertise for troubleshooting and resolving problems with Production Unit processes and workcells.

  • Collect, analyze and report equipment throughput and performance information.

  • Implement solutions to improve reliability of infrastructure and laboratory automation systems.

  • Coordinate maintenance activities and shutdown requirements for production equipment and facilities.

  • Maintain and update CMMS

  • Write IOPQ documentation, SOPs and work instructions for various manufacturing systems

  • Manage asset life cycles for diverse manufacturing equipment and fixtures.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Biology or relevant field with 5+ years of job experience in automation engineering roles, or Master of Science with at least 3+ years of automation engineering experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in a role involving troubleshooting, repair and optimization of liquid handling or other programmed automation equipment.

  • Experience in programming control commands for Hamilton liquid handling robotic systems in VENUS and/or Hamilton Standard Language (HSL).

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex equipment / systems and supporting utility services.

  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment failures immediately and communicate status to engineers and production.

  • Ability to travel ~5% internationally

 

Nice to have skills & background: 

  • Working knowledge of programming languages (Python or C# preferred).

  • Proficiency in translating complex manual workflows to automated liquid handling systems.

  • Experience successfully integrating 3rd party devices into robotic liquid handling systems.

  • Practical knowledge of NGS library preparation/nucleic acid methods and troubleshooting.

  • Experience developing, implementing and integrating MES and/or LIMS processes in the life science, medical device manufacturing or the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Experience with execution of Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), Site Acceptance Test (SAT), Commissioning and Qualification.

Below is the salary range for this full time position. The actual base pay will depend on several factors unique to each candidate, including one’s skills, qualifications, and experience.
