Job Description

AECOM is seeking a proactive and skilled Construction Manager to join our team on one of the flagship projects of AECOM in the Netherlands. This four years project focuses on the modernization and expansion of critical terminal facilities, enhancing operational efficiency while prioritizing sustainability and safety. Covering a vast 500,000m², the site will become a fully automated operational terminal, designed for maximum efficiency and advanced functionality. As a Construction Manager, you oversee the complete project lifecycle, ensuring delivery within scheduled timelines. You are responsible for the operational execution (time, cost, quality) of APM Terminals' projects. This includes managing the implementation of both client and internal HSSE requirements, as well as identifying opportunities to achieve cost savings on construction projects and the overall programme when applicable.

If you have a passion for creating safe and sustainable workplaces, strong communication skills in Dutch and English, and thrive in dynamic, high-impact environments, imagine contributing to one of the most advanced and innovative projects in the world, located right in the heart of our Rotterdam region. Known for its dynamic terminal operations and unique challenges, Rotterdam offers an unparalleled opportunity to tackle complex safety and sustainability objectives while driving transformation in a world-class port.

Qualifications

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • A constant on-site presence is required.
  • Serve as a key member of the Project Delivery Team, reporting to the Project Manager.
  • Oversee the operational delivery of all construction projects, including major terminal upgrades and infrastructure enhancements.
  • Manage end-to-end project services, meeting strict programme deadlines with measurable performance indicators.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) protocols as a top priority, ensuring compliance with all project requirements.
  • Foster robust interaction with the client team to maintain clear communication and client confidence throughout project progress.
  • Lead and motivate contractors and colleagues to deliver excellence in a dynamic and demanding environment.
  • Ensure alignment with the client’s and AECOM’s HSSE requirements, overseeing audits and continuous safety improvements.
  • Deliver projects within agreed budgets and implement cost-saving measures where applicable.
  • Execute terminal upgrade programmes with strict adherence to time, cost, and quality standards.

Further Generic Tasks:

  • Actively participate in safety meetings, ensuring operational staff and contractors are fully aligned with safety messages and standards.
  • Share safety learnings with the Safety Manager to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Lead project meetings across all stages, from scoping and design reviews to handovers and post-completion audits.
  • Ensure compliance with APM Terminals’ operational standards while accommodating flexibility for evolving requirements.
  • Oversee supply chain partners to ensure adherence to agreed project execution plans and client expectations.
  • Champion AECOM’s values and deliver exceptional service that reflects our commitment to operational excellence.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in an operational role in construction or infrastructure projects.
  • Fluent Dutch and English language skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in compliance and ethics.
  • Proven HSSE leadership experience.
  • Strong client focus and ability to manage client relationships effectively.
  • Recognized construction or engineering qualification (or equivalent experience).
