Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations.
The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.
Job Description
Incumbent will work as part of a team to provide environmental services for the gold mining operations and ancillary facilities. Under the direction of the Environmental Manager, will ensure that company activities associated with Tailings Management and Heap Leach Facilities responsibilities at the Nevada Sites (Bald Mountain and Round Mountain) are conducted in accordance with company requirements and in compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and licenses. Job Responsibilities
Heap Leach Facilities Functions:
1. Develop, coordinate & monitor all activities related to safe operations of heap leach facilities (HLF), including permitting, design, and surveillance (including monitoring and inspection), emergency planning, and HLF management plans and procedures follow all applicable regulatory requirements or Kinross Standards for the Nevada sites.
2. Coordinate, participate, and manage the Engineer of Record (EoR) inspection(as needed) to track the performance of the HLF for Nevada sites. Coordinate, participate in, and manage EoR inspections, third party reviews, and other HLF inspections/reviews.
3. Manage & implement any & all action plans and schedules for any internal or external review reports at the Nevada sites after VP-GM approval of such action plans.
4. Support the process teams, deputy General Manager (GM) and Vice President-General Manager (VP-GM) in decision making for the HLFs.
5. Coordinate with the Director, Tailings and Environment (DTE) to ensure that corporate requirements are met.
6. Coordinate & assist the Project Superintendent on any new and/or expansion construction of the Nevada sites HLFs.
7. Manage, complete, and ensure all reporting requirements, including any action item status are completed on-time to the VP-GM & the DT.
Tailings Functions:
1. Manage, coordinate & monitor all activities related to tailings including technical aspects, safe operation, permitting, design, construction, operation, surveillance (includes monitoring and inspection), and emergency preparedness.
2. Frequently communications with the Environmental Manager, Nevada Operations to ensure that regulatory commitments are met & proactively managed & effectively communicate with site personnel regarding tailings & regulatory obligations.
3. Coordinate, participate in, and manage the agency inspections, annual EoR inspection, third party reviews, and other tailings inspections. Interact with EoR to track the performance of the tailings facility.
4. Review, update & submit as needed annually the Operation, Maintenance and Surveillance (OMS) manual, Emergency Action Plan (EAP), prior to annual dam safety inspection.
5. Coordinate with Environmental personnel water balance, management of process water, reclaim water management & seepage performance. Water balance to align with Kinross Water Management Standard.
6. Lead the Run-Out Studies for the Nevada sites: Coordinate with the EoR the development of the run-out locations, analysis assumptions & types, & the requested level of detail in modeling & run-out mapping and review with DTE prior to completing the run-out study.
7. Ensure the Nevada site Tailings management plans are following all applicable regulatory or Kinross standards requirements.
8. Manage, complete, & ensure all reporting requirements, including any action item status are completed on-time to the VP-GM & the DT.
General Functions
1. Effectively communicate with regulatory and government agencies, site personnel, and professional associations, to develop and maintain good working relationships and regulatory compliance as needed.
