Overview:  

We are seeking a Team Leader for the Environmental Sampling and Data Evaluation Team.  This position resides in the Environmental Protection Services Division (EPSD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). EPSD is responsible for implementing programs that enable ORNL’s science missions through effective regulatory compliance support, specifically by facilitating ORNL compliance with Federal and State RCRA/Clean Air Act/Clean Water Act/TSCA/USDA regulatory requirements and applicable Department of Energy (DOE) Orders.  The successful candidate will be mentored by the retiring Team Leader and assume the role after a transition period.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

The successful candidate will lead a team that is responsible for:

 

  • Monitoring environmental media including liquid effluents, surface water, groundwater, precipitation, ambient air, vegetation, soils, biota, etc.

  • Performing laboratory and field analyses and interacting with internal and external analytical laboratories;

  • Managing and interpreting environmental data and preparing the data for customers and external stakeholders for compliance with a range of regulatory and Department of Energy requirements;

  • Coordinating the preparation of multiple chapters and appendices of the Oak Ridge Reservation Annual Site Environmental Report.

  • Managing the safety of a team whose work involves exposure to physical, chemical, and radiological hazards in laboratory and field environments.

  • Lead continuous improvement teams to enhance program consistency and efficiency.

  • Communicate effectively with all levels of ORNL and establish strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering

  • 12 or more years of relevant experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in an environmental or information management discipline

  • Previous experience with leading teams/managing staff is desired

  • Experience managing environmental data from a range of media

  • Experience managing environmental staff

  • Experience applying geographic information system tools to environmental questions

  • Understanding of analytical laboratory practices and procedures

  • Understanding of sample management processes

  • Understanding of the Department of Energy's missions and how they affect the Oak Ridge Reservation

  • Understanding of environmental chemistry and radiochemistry sampling and analytical methods

  • Understanding of hydrogeology and groundwater monitoring and investigation techniques

  • Experience preparing and implementing sampling and analysis plans for special investigations

  • Familiarity with a variety of environmental monitoring methods, techniques and equipment

  • Experience reviewing and implementing state and federal regulation
