Overview: 

 

Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer / Analyst seeking a unique opportunity to contribute to world-class research and development projects? Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is looking for an individual with exceptional work behaviors to join our team in Oak Ridge, TN, United States.

As a Mechanical Engineering Analyst for the US ITER project office, you will have the opportunity to provide full-time mechanical analytical support resources for the fabrication phase of multiple systems that support the ITER project. This includes systems such as Electron Cyclotron Heating, Ion Cyclotron Heating, Pelleting Injection, Vacuum, and Port Integration Systems. You will work closely with technical managers, engineers, designers, and fabrication vendors to design and analyze complex mechanical hardware associated with the US ITER project.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and alter existing FEA models
  • Perform FEA analysis and other calculations to evaluate and verify design concepts related to non-conformances
  • Review the analytical work of other project participants and actively contribute to design reviews and trade-off studies
  • Verify US ITER designs to ITER International Office specified requirements and criteria
  • Advise on the application of ASME and international mechanical design codes and standards
  • Perform various analyses, including linear/nonlinear structural analysis of various Tokamak components
  • Document all analysis results, prepare technical reports, and present findings at technical reviews
  • Prepare design details, analysis documents, technical specifications, and statements of work
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5 or more years of related work experience
  • Advanced finite element modeling experience using ANSYS Workbench interfaces for multi-physics applications
  • Experience with mechanical design and analysis fundamentals and their application to mechanical hardware

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • 10 or more years of specialized expertise in mechanical engineering design, fabrication, and assembly of large-scale fusion energy, research-related, or nuclear hardware, in addition to a Master's Degree.
  • Experience with Electromagnetic analysis and the use of ANSYS Maxell Software
  • Experience with International codes such as Eurocode and RCC-MR
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with a diverse international project team
  • Experience with ANSYS APDL
