About the role

Applications are invited from  Specialist Medical Practitioners with background in the cancer care field, to lead the delivery of a new Cancer Strategy for Tasmania. The Strategy will outline what is needed across the service system in Tasmania over the next 10 years to reduce the impact of cancer, address disparities and improve outcomes for people affected by cancer, including those who care for people living with cancer.

The role is responsible for providing essential clinical expertise and perspective to the planning process, ensuring strategies and initiatives are grounded in best practice and patient need. Resources to undertake service analysis and planning activities, and to facilitate delivery of the Tasmanian Cancer Strategy are allocated from within the Health Planning Unit of the Department. 

With increases in demand for cancer services across Tasmania expected, and with service complexity increasing as treatment becomes more specialised and individualised, innovative approaches to the systems of cancer care delivery will be required in Tasmania. This is an exciting opportunity for a transformational leader interested in driving and influencing the way cancer services are provided in Tasmania to meet future need. In this role you will:

  • Provide expert advice to Health Board and Government on issues pertaining cancer care
  • Lead engagement and build productive working relationships across the cancer care continuum, including with consumers, clinicians, professional bodies, peak bodies, advocacy groups, private and not-for-profit service providers and executive teams
  • Provide clinical leadership and guidance to the planning process and Strategy development 
  • Chair the Cancer Clinical Advisory Committee
  • Provide leadership to the Bluegum’ Health Transformation design/functional requirements process for ‘ cancer services

Key characteristics of the person selected for this role are:

  • A professional with a highly respected background in the cancer care field
  • Ability to drive substantial change and forward-thinking cancer service strategies
  • A commitment to service performance, evidence-based practice, improving health outcomes, and whole of system thinking
  • Good judgement and conviction to work across all levels of government and services to champion what is needed to set up for future success and
  • An excellent speaker and communicator, able to engage positively with diverse audiences, from government officials to healthcare providers to patients.

Details of Appointment

Fixed term part time, day worker position, working 38 hours per fortnight, commencing from as soon as possible for a period of 12 months.

Salary

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $216,300 - $310,389 per annum, pro rata + 11.5% superannuation + access to salary packaging 

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 -$310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

*Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar vacancies.

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available

  • Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year
  • Motor vehicle allowance of $28,786 per annum, pro rat
  • Participation in Private Practice Scheme 35% or allowance in lieu of private practice schemes 35%

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:
