Our mills in Rumford, Maine and Biron Wisconsin are integrated paper & pulp facilities, and our mill in Fairmont, West Virginia is one of only three in the world that produces air-dried, recycled pulp. Our fourth mill in Old Town, ME produces softwood kraft pulp. We are proud of our 1400 dedicated employees, who together produce more than 1.2 million short tons of pulp & paper annually.

ND has recently announced building one of the world’s largest and efficient recycle pulp mills that will support B26’s transition from lightweight coated papers to packaging grades. The successful candidate will have responsibility to supervise, lead and drive change mill-wide. Responsibilities include managing all aspects of shift operations: safety, environmental, quality, cost control, productivity and leading the operations through all emergency situations. We are looking to hire a Boilerhouse Relief to join our dynamic team.  This is a full-time hourly position working a 12-hour rotating shift under the direction of the Boiler and Turbine Assistant Superintendent.

Wage Rates: 

  • Additional $.50 / hour for 3rd class POPE license
  • Additional $1.00 / hour for 2nd class POPE license
  • Additional $2.50 / hour for 1st class POPE license

Duties of the Job:

  • Assists Operators as required.
  • Operates boiler water treatment equipment and mixes boiler water chemicals, completes grease routes.
  • Collects boiler water samples, conducts tests as required and interprets results.
  • Assists with startups and shutdowns.
  • Reports malfunctions or irregularities to Control Operator.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties and other duties as assigned by supervision.
  • Monitors auxiliary equipment.

On-The-Job Requirements:

  • Must successfully complete Steam Power Plant training program and progress through various levels of operator licensing program.
  • Must obtain First Aid and CPR certificates.
  • Must lift 50 lbs. occasionally, e.g., chemicals, clean-up of waste materials, move 55-gallon drums, etc.
  • Must climb, e.g., stairs and ladders.
  • Must do considerable amount of walking throughout shift.
  • Must read and use measuring devices, e.g., pH meters, conductivity meters, etc.
  • Must do basic math, e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
  • Must perform precise laboratory practices.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations and perform under pressure.
  • Must have and maintain vision standards to meet job requirements, perform safely and attend all safety meetings.

Control Operator - When performing as Control Operator, maintain safe and efficient operation of steam power plant; administer first aid.

Turbine Operator - When performing as Turbine Operator, synchronize and operate steam turbine generators; operate up to 13.2KV switch gear and motor starting equipment; administer first aid.  Test boiler feedwater, condensates and make-up water.

Boilerhouse Relief - When performing as Auxiliary Operator (Relief), visually inspect boilers, turbines and auxiliary equipment and make adjustments as required.  Further follow directions from Booth Operator and Turbine Operator as to any further needs while relieving on shift.

  Qualifications:

  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the above job.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors.
  • Must pass vision test. Visual standards are:
    • Visual Acuity: Distance acuity to be 20/30 or better in each eye with or without corrective glasses.
  • Must be clean shaven where the sealing surface of the respirator contacts the face.
  • Must pass a respirator fit test.
  • Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat conditions in a fire suit.
  • Must be able to work around air borne particulates (i.e., coal dust, wood dust, etc.).
