About the role

Overview

The Council’s David Rockefeller Studies Program is one of the country’s largest foreign policy think tanks with a widely respected and influential research staff. The Studies Program works to advance the public debate on U.S. foreign policy and international affairs through its publications, meetings, and public outreach.

Think Global Health is a CFR-sponsored online magazine that examines how health shapes economies, societies, and everyday lives around the world. In its first three years of operation, the site published more than 900 articles from some 800 contributors , representing over 55 countries on six continents, and attracted more than 4 million page views. Think Global Health has been nominated for two Webby awards. Major news outlets, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, BBC, and Vox, have shared and linked to Think Global Health articles and interviews.

 

This position is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced, growing team dedicated to publishing expert analyses of global health. Under the direction of the managing editor of Think Global Health, the staff editor will generate ideas, edit, and develop data-driven articles for the website.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Edit articles by working closely with authors to improve analysis, arguments, and readability. They will ensure that articles align with Think Global Health style and sensibility
  • Make compelling data visualizations for a general audience
  • Consult with experts, other editors, and authors to generate article ideas and follow through on commissioning pieces
  • Evaluate submissions
  • Work collegially with other editors, copy editors, freelancers, and other personnel
  • Consult with the site’s newsletter, social media, and communications teams on the promotion of articles

Qualifications

  • Two to three years of professional editorial experience
  • The ability to work efficiently on multiple tasks on deadline, to interact well with the entire staff, and to work flexible hours when necessary
  • Exceptional data visualization, reporting, writing and editing skills
  • Familiarity with Datawrapper required, comfort with other visualization platforms (e.g., Python, R preferred)
  • A strong understanding of and interest in global health and international affairs

Pay Range

$55,000 to $60,000 per year

Pay commensurate with experience and education
