Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Data Analytics & Visualization Lead to support the Chicago Department of Water Management’s (DWM) Capital Improvement Program. This hands-on technical role will lead the development of analytics solutions and dashboards that transform engineering, operations, and maintenance data into actionable insights that directly improve DWM’s daily operations and long-term planning.
In this position, you will serve as a technical team lead who develops BI/analytics solutions, ensures data quality, collaborates with DWM stakeholders, and guides junior staff without needing full managerial oversight responsibilities. This position plays a pivotal role in transforming a major public utility into a more data-driven organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, maintain, and optimize data pipelines using SQL Server, stored procedures, and ETL frameworks.
- Integrate EAM, GIS, operational, maintenance, and engineering datasets into centralized analytical models.
- Develop operational and strategic KPI frameworks for engineering and utility management.
- Build semantic data models and optimized data sets for end users and dashboards.
- Lead development, enhancement, and maintenance of Power BI dashboards supporting operations, engineering, maintenance, capital planning, and leadership decision-making.
- Ensure dashboards are intuitive, user-friendly, and designed according to strong visualization and UX best practices (formal HCI/UI training not required).
- Collaborate with stakeholders to refine requirements, prototype, iterate, and deliver value-driven visual tools.
- Work closely with DWM staff and internal teams to gather business requirements, develop prototypes, and iterate rapidly.
- Serve as a technical lead and mentor for junior data analysts or engineers; provide design review and technical oversight.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams (Engineering, GIS, EAM, Water Quality, Program Controls) to ensure data alignment.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in data analytics, computer science, engineering, information systems, or related field and 4+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience integrating GIS data or understanding geospatial concepts.
- Experience in utilities, public infrastructure, engineering, construction, or operations.
- Experience informally or formally leading or mentoring a small BI/analytics team.
- Familiarity with UI/UX or dashboard design best practices (formal certification not required).
- Experience with predictive analytics, forecasting, or statistical modeling.
- Relevant technical certifications (Power BI, SQL Server, PMP, BI/Analytics).
- Strong hands-on proficiency with Power BI, SQL, and data modeling
- Experience in integrating data from different operational data systems (i.e. asset management and maintenance systems).
- Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with non-technical stakeholders.
Additional Information
- Sponsorship is not available for this position now or in the future.
- Relocation may be available for this position.
