Senior Software Engineer, Search & Recommendations

Wayfair’s Search and Recommendations team provides the core platforms and services that allow our customers to discover & buy the products they love. Our systems leverage Wayfair’s extensive customer and product data to deliver trusted and valuable recommendations in real-time using custom machine learning models. We’re looking for an experienced senior engineer to join our highly impactful & fully autonomous team to help us build our next-generation Recommendations platform. Senior Engineer will be responsible for high quality implementation and consistent maintenance of the systems owned by the team. The models and services created by this team determine what products we recommend in real-time to our customers even when we don’t have any browsing history. Almost 90% of the products across various placements shown are attributed to default recommendations. We have ambitious goals to shape the future of Wayfair and we are looking for senior engineers to help accelerate and build upon the results we’ve delivered so far.

What You'll Do

• Work with a broader highly collaborative cross-functional team that includes product managers, data scientists, and analysts.
• Work with a variety of technologies, including Java, Python, Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Aerospike, Airflow, RESTful web services, gRPC, Kubernetes, and GCP.
• Build platforms and services that allow us to make realtime ML powered decisions.
• Deliver direct measurable results for our business and customers through improved product recommendations and search results.
• Mentor junior engineers to develop the next generation of Wayfair engineering
• Provide high quality code and technical design reviews
• Contribute to the code base, with a mind to best practices and an equally high degree of autonomy

What You'll Need

• A graduate of a computer science, mathematics, engineering, physical science related degree program with 5+ years of relevant industry experience, OR have 7+ years of relevant industry experience
• 4+ years of experience on a modern programing language, preferably Python or Java
• Experience developing and designing scalable distributed systems with deep understanding of object oriented design and design patterns.
• Experience developing and designing recommendation systems and productionalizing ML models is a big plus
• Experience with large scale data processing using big data technologies like Hadoop, Spark and Google BiqQuery is a big plus.
• Experience using Kubernetes, Docker, Buildkite, and Terraform for containerization and CI/CD is a plus
• Experience with streaming technologies like Storm, Kafka are a plus
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with engineers, product managers, data scientists, analysts and business stakeholders.
