Energy Manager or Energy Manager, Senior

Job Summary/Basic Function:

This position will be filled at either the Energy Manager or the Energy Manager, Senior level, depending on qualifications.

This position drives energy savings and utility cost avoidance across the university’s portfolio of buildings and grounds. They conduct energy audits, analyze campus-wide utility usage, oversee the university’s metering infrastructure, perform calculations, and recommend improvements. They may manage small projects through the Affiliates program. They are a subject matter expert on topics related to the university’s past, present, and future energy and water consumption. If filled at the Energy Manager, Senior level, this individual will also guide and oversee broad strategic efforts to reduce the university’s resource consumption and utility costs, and define the trajectory of the university’s energy infrastructure. They provide leadership for the university’s revolving fund. They present recommendations to senior university leadership and are a resource for stakeholders across campus.

Facilities Operations and Maintenance supports the university’s strategic mission by professionally maintaining safe, functional and attractive facilities and grounds, while also providing quality support services to the campus community.

Level Scope:

Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of areas typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.

Essential Functions:

The Energy Manager:
• Conducts energy audits and applies engineering knowledge to identify, define, and implement strategies and projects that reduce utility consumption and cost in university-owned facilities. Areas of focus include HVAC, Building Automation Systems, lighting, water, and renewables.
• Tracks and analyzes the university’s energy and water usage data, and applies engineering knowledge to forecast future consumption trends.
• Estimates costs and savings of efficiency projects, and applies economic analysis principles to calculate project financial performance metrics such as simple payback, internal rate of return, and net present value.
• Supports project implementation by reviewing plans and specifications and coordinating with contractors, consultants, and Campus Operations teams.
• Oversees the network of university-owned meters connected to the Schneider Power Monitoring Expert (PME) software. Runs meter data reports for stakeholders. Coordinates system maintenance with Schneider and other third parties.
• Identifies and advocates for opportunities to increase the university’s use of renewable energy (e.g. geothermal, solar, etc.).
• Provides pertinent energy and water data to support the Office of Budget & Planning’s utility budgeting process, and the implementation of a utility bill management platform and dashboard.
• Supports the process of starting, stopping, and transferring utility services to university properties.
• Responds to requests for data and information related to the university’s energy and water infrastructure and consumption.
• Communicates with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders in a professional, diplomatic and collaborative manner.
• Engages in professional development activities as needed to remain abreast of industry trends and maintain pertinent certifications / licensure.
• Participates in departmental training activities.
• Responds to after-hours calls as required.

In addition to the duties of the Energy Manager, the Energy Manager, Senior:
• Leads the development, adoption and implementation of an energy management plan for the university, sets long-term energy goals, and guides organizational strategy related to energy and other resources.
• Creates and implements policies and design standards promoting energy efficiency. Participates in the design & construction process to ensure alignment with these standards and goals.
• Effectively presents recommendations to senior leadership at the departmental, division, and university levels.
• Provides leadership for the university’s Revolving Fund, including serving on th
