Duties and Responsibilities for Associate Professor: 

  1. Participates in maintaining or developing GME performance metrics, monitoring and reporting, policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures, ensuring periodic review and revision.
  2. Contribute to the growth of GME, particularly growth and expansion on neighbor islands, including development of new programs and expansion proposals aligned with institutional mission, workforce needs, and partner capacity.
  3. Participates in the institutional strategic planning, business planning, and resource development for graduate medical education.
  4. Advance initiatives that support resident, fellow, faculty, and staff well-being and foster a respectful, safe, and inclusive learning environment.
  5. Maintain a strong, effective, proactive, and collaborative team-based relationship with Hawai‘i Residency Programs, Inc. (HRP) leadership.
  6. May serve as the ACGME Designated Institutional Official (DIO) with authority and responsibility for oversight and administration of all ACGME-accredited programs sponsored by the institution, including all responsibilities, including those done in collaboration with the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) that are detailed in the ACGME Institutional Requirements.
  7. Engage in the education, training, and supervision of faculty members, residents, fellows, and medical students in JABSOM clinical departments.
  8. Support the orientation and development of program directors, associate program directors, program administrators, chief residents, and other educational leaders to optimize GME processes (e.g., resident and program evaluation) in the program and/or prepare them for educational leadership positions.
  9. Collaborate with faculty and leaders in the medical student curriculum to ensure seamless transitions from undergraduate medical education to graduate medical education, and further development of competency-based medical education along the continuum.
  10. Develop research and/or quality projects or initiatives in education or health system science, or other related areas of focus.
  11. Serve on University Committees.
  12. Participate in institutional, regional, and national GME committees, councils, and professional organizations as an institutional representative.
  13. May supervise the deputy DIO, assistant DIO(s), and GME program staff.
  14. Perform related work as assigned. 

For the Full Professor Level:

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Associate Professor rank, to assume the role of professional leadership within the school and medical profession.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate Professor:

  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school. 
  • Four (4) years at the rank of Assistant Professor. Candidates not applying from the Assistant Professor rank should have seven (7) years or more of post-doctoral experience in a recognized medical school or major medical research/scholarship institution.
  • Eligible for unrestricted Hawai’i Medical License at time of hire.
  • ABMS Board certification and Maintenance of Board Certification.
  • Evidence of effective medical education activities, scholarly/research activity, educational or clinic
