Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and the School of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW) are seeking candidates for one full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor without tenure by reason of funding. Academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank. This position will be based at VAPSHCS where patient care efforts will occur. Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments and Associate and Full Professors hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1 – June 30). We anticipate the hire to take place in January 2024 onwards. Depending on qualifications, the successful candidate will be appointed in one of the following UW departments: Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Rehabilitation Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Ophthalmology, and Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The successful candidate will fully share with the Associate Chief of Staff - Research & Development (ACOS - R&D) the direction of the Research and Development service line (R&D) at VAPSHCS. R&D oversees the administration of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research at VAPSHCS, which has the fourth largest VA research portfolio in the nation. The successful candidate would be expected to promote and enhance the R&D mission by fostering collaboration within and outside VA, supporting career development of trainees and faculty, and advancing the research enterprise through their own research program and support of other VAPSHCS investigators.

As part of the R&D management team under the supervision of the ACOS, the DACOS will formulate the goals and objectives of the research program for the facility. The incumbent will be responsible for initiating policies, procedures, and organizational structures necessary to achieve the stipulated goals and be responsible for planning, developing, and directing the complex scientific and administrative activities necessary to advance the program. The Deputy will be responsible for compliance with both VISN- and VACO-mandated research policies including those issued by the Office of Research and Development (ORD) and the Office of Research Oversight (ORO). The DACOS for R&D will work closely with research investigators by mentoring and assisting them with proposal development and budget preparation to meet the R&D Committee and sub-committee requirements and, as such, will serve as the primary point of contact for the local research community. The DACOS will be an academic clinician with training and experience in a field(s) relevant to VA medicine and with an established research program. Teaching of medical students and MD trainees will be part of the incumbent’s duties.

This position is paid directly by the Veteran’s Administration Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and receives no UW compensation.  Please refer to the VAPSHCS for information about compensation for this position.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold an MD or DO (or foreign equivalent), and board-certification in any specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (or foreign equivalent). Applicants must be U.S. Citizens (permanent residents may be appointed only if it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens). Candidates should have strong academic leadership and mentorship skills, commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, experience with clinical teaching programs, and prior scientific accomplishments that include interdisciplinary or collaborative programs and a vital, funded research program.
