SUMMARY
The Field Crew Chief is responsible for field survey crew engaged in making plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects. This role requires accurate measurement and calculation of points, elevations, lines, angles, areas, and land contours.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Participate in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers.
• Instruct and train survey crew members on mapping methods, equipment use, and field safety procedures.
• Collect field survey data using standard industry methods and equipment, including total stations, data collectors, GPS, drones, and scanners.
• Set up, calibrate, and operate survey instruments to measure distances, elevations, and angles.
• Prepare accurate field notes and drawings.
• Conduct field surveys for roadways, bridges, and flood control projects, including installation of construction stakes and establishment of vertical/horizontal control, right-of-way, monuments, corners, and boundaries.
• Perform survey calculations using calculators, data collectors, laptops, and coordinate geometry software (e.g., AutoCAD).
• Analyze raw data for mathematical closure and geometric accuracy.
• Provide accurate survey information to internal land development and GIS teams.
• Research and interpret existing records, including maps, plans, deeds, easements, and right-of-way documentation.
• Maintain organized and up-to-date field data, project files, and indexing systems.
• Maintain inventory of assigned survey equipment and ensure proper vehicle stocking and maintenance.
• Complete all assignments accurately, efficiently, and within budget, while adhering to all safety protocols.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods across various terrains and weather conditions.
• Willingness to travel occasionally, including nights and weekends, based on project needs.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and make decisions within established guidelines.
• Demonstrated leadership and team engagement abilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Must be fluent in the English language.
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of 5 years of construction-related surveying experience.
• Experience with as-built surveys and GPS required.
• Experience with additional data collection technologies preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS
• Valid driver’s license required.

The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, and occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
