Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a professional Accountant. The person selected for this position will perform professional accounting duties in the preparation of financial statements and auditinformational reports. Additionally, the successful candidate will maintain monthly accounting records and train staff and relate information to management and field personnel. Essential Functions
- Processes obligation reconciliations, warrant action requests, salary refunds, and expenditure adjustment transmittals.
- Reviews data and corrects any discrepancies identified in the reconciliation process.
- Responds to inquiries from field staff and lower-level staff regarding correct processing of agency transactions.
- Reviews current auditing practices and procedures and recommends revisions or implements change.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, with courses in business administration and accounting or four (4) years of technical accounting experience.
- Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program, may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers at least two (2) years of professional accounting and/or auditing experience.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook and/or similar type of computer programs.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working with office methods, procedures, standard office accounting machines and equipment.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience evaluating accounting problems of moderate difficulty such as rectifying discrepancies between financial system reports and developing a plan to resolve the issue.
- Prefers the ability to work independently in a busy office work environment.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience performing detailed work
