About the role

The Research Engineer III - Air Movers/Turbomachines will work for the NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) Team, which is part of the Rheem Global Center of Excellence, with a focus on residential and commercial Water Heater and Airconditioning products development (low noise air management systems (AMS) solutions and technology advancements, continuous product support and field support, facility, and capabilities enhancement for the Rheem AMS).

This role is responsible for applying creative processes, with the experimental, analytical, and computational methods for the AMS performance, efficiencies, sound quality and level improvements to achieve high class sound ratings that leads the Heat Pump Water Heaters and HVAC industry. This role also requires the leadership in developing AMS suppliers’ relationships, testing partners, outsourcing test engineers and technicians. The focus areas for this position include aerodynamics, axial, radial, tangential and mixed flow fan technologies, related aeroacoustics simulations, CAD modeling, prototyping, testing (experimental expertise and in-depth exposure to AMCA, ISO, AHRI, ANSI, ASHRAE, and BS Standards related to AMS, Heat Pump, Water Heaters, and HVAC). Must demonstrate the knowledge in the air management fundamentals, simulations, designing, prototyping, testing. It would be a plus if applicant have experience in the structural vibration, component packaging and system noise reductions, and acoustic mitigation methods. This Engineer will work closely with various product & technology development teams within the Water and Air organizations, globally.

This position will serve our Water Heater Divisionlocated in Montgomery, AL or Roswell, GA.

  • Provide leadership for the Air Management Systems vertical; for the product design, fan and blower technology development, AMS (fan and blower design/turbomachines) engineering standard work for Rheem divisions to use, support and carry-out the advancement in AMS technology needs as requested by Rheem divisions, and manage the program
  • The scope encompasses technology development utilizing CAD design, analytical modeling, optimization, computational and experimental methodologies applicable to Water Heating and AC products. The fan technologies are not limited to Rheem product and could be utilized for other industries. Developing scalable technologies that are grounded in the fundamental understanding of the system level applications.
  • Work closely with product engineers as a member of the various product & technology development teams to design reliable & quiet products and provide solutions that meets market requirements and makes Rheem a distinct leader for the low noise systems and components.
  • Plan, conduct and supervise various projects related to the AMS, fan-coil packaging, system designs that leads industry with low noise AMS (Axial Fan, Radial Fan, Mixed Flow Fans, Forward and Backward Radial Blowers, Transvers Fans, and Systems (Heat Pump Water Heaters, and Air Conditioners)
  • Work closely with both technicians and engineers (R&D, product, acoustics, lab, etc.).
  • Responsibilities also includes prioritizing design and test requests, designing and proposing the appropriate tests, discussing, assuring the validity of the data and its interpretation, documenting the work in formal reports and supervising customer communication.
  • Plan, conduct and supervise work related to developing AMS/system, flow, and acoustic simulation models. The scope includes prediction of fan, system, and sound performance curves. Create AMS database and scaling tools (component level and system level).
  • Correlating Excel and MathWorks based analytical tools with the simulation and prediction models, with test data, to improve analytical, and simulation methods.
  • Coordinate protypes design and testing with Rheem divisions and suppliers.
  • Support and successfully accomplish annual corporate objectives for individuals and team.
  • Effectively utilize personal project management techniques and utilize the available technical skills and resources necessary for success.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and/or Physics (or related technical discipline with focus in aerodynamics, turbomachines, and HVAC)
  • 5 years of HVAC and fan design, R&D, and simulation
  • Education and experience in Applied and Computational Fluid Mechanics is highly desired.
  • Formal coursework in Fan and Blower Design, HVAC, Turbomachines, Aerodynamics, Airfoil Design, Computational Methods, Computational Fluid Dynamics, a
