We are seeking an Additive Manufacturing Expert based in Vaasa, Finland, to play a key role in integrating Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies across Wärtsilä’s product development and production ecosystems. As AM matures into a reliable, industrialized manufacturing method, it offers vast potential for enhancing product functionality, design freedom, and operational efficiency. At Wärtsilä, we see AM as a strategic enabler for advancing mission-critical components and tools to help decarbonize the Marine and Energy industries.

This role will focus on leveraging AM as a system-level approach—optimizing interactions between systems, teams, and technologies. You will be at the forefront of identifying and creating unique value by ensuring that component interfaces and system integration across various functional teams deliver optimal outcomes. You will join the Materials&Tribology team with strong knowhow on materials technology, NDT-methods and tribology.
We have in-house AM machinery for a wide range of polymer, composite, and metal materials located at our Sustainable Technology Hub (STH) in Vaasa. Our materials laboratory will offer you high class equipment for quality assurance of manufactured AM-components.

The ideal candidate is a creative problem-solver, with a strong ability to integrate AM into the broader engineering and manufacturing ecosystems. You are someone who thrives on collaboration and possesses the technical expertise to work across teams, optimizing systems, processes, and design interfaces to drive value and innovation.

Responsibilities:

Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including design, manufacturing, and quality, to ensure that AM solutions are not only feasible but also enhance overall system performance. Identify synergies and optimize interfaces across various systems and technologies.

System Integration and Optimization: Drive the integration of AM technologies into existing and new systems/manufacturing methods, ensuring that both individual components and their interfaces are optimized for seamless operation across different teams and functions (e.g., design, production, quality, supply chain). Maintain cost awareness in all tasks.

Develop and Validate AM Applications: Participate in design/validation process of new AM applications by supporting the designers and performing material analysis for prototype components.

New Methodologies and Concepts: Innovate and develop new AM design methodologies and application concepts that support system-level objectives. Work with internal stakeholders to define specific needs and develop corresponding solutions.

Business Case Development: Develop comprehensive business cases for AM applications, demonstrating their value not only in isolation but also in the context of larger system performance improvements. Present these cases to technology owners and management.

Mentorship and Knowledge Sharing: Coach and mentor engineers across Wärtsilä on system-level thinking in AM, helping teams design for additive manufacturing while considering the broader system and component interfaces.

Innovation in Cross-functional Teams: Lead and support innovation efforts by working within cross-functional teams to explore new possibilities for AM in design, production, quality, supply chain, and beyond.

Requirements:

Minimum M.Sc. in Mechanical or Material Engineering; further education or specialization in systems engineering or related fields is an advantage.

Proven experience in both metal and polymer additive manufacturing technologies, with a strong understanding of their integration into broader manufacturing and product ecosystems.<
