Job Description:
This position will provide Anesthesia services to all service areas including small animal medicine, small animal surgery, all small animal specialties, and all Large Animal service areas. It is essential that this person has expertise in handling small animals and is able to provide instruction to veterinary students.
Job Responsibilities:
40% - Perform, teach and instruct all aspects of inducing patients under Anesthesia. Tasks include insertion and maintenance of catheter's including central venous, epidural, or arterial catheter's; knowledge of aspirating and troubleshooting an endotracheal tube; ability to perform epidural injections or regional nerve blocks with 75% success rate; Knowledge related to inhalation anesthetics.
35% - Perform, teach and instruct day to day operations of the Anesthesia unit, including but not limited to assisting house officers, clinicians and students with appointments, emergencies, and procedures. Knowledge of executing animal patient care, monitoring, diagnostic and treatment techniques in accordance with applicable established protocol. Provide Assistance in the teaching process of veterinary students and veterinary technician students; Supervising, teaching, and assisting 4th year veterinary students, house officers and clinicians with procedures and treatments within the Anesthesia unit.
15% - Perform a variety of duties as assigned by the supervisor or direct of nursing such as: Manage scheduler duties assuring cases are assigned in tandem with scheduling coordinator. Manage day to day personnel concerns in the absence of the Supervisor. Communicates directly with supervisor or Nursing Director when problems arise. Helps organize and schedule CE topics for anesthesia team. Assists in room reservations and scheduling monthly team meetings. Take notes in meetings and provide minutes of meetings. Verify tasks are completed. Provide input for performance evaluations. Manage equipment log for accreditation standards. Track maintenance of all anesthesia machines and monitors, including items stored in other areas (MRI, equine, small animal, etc.). Send out vaporizers as needed for calibration purposes. Order and maintain specialty items (LA ET tubes, oxygen demand valves, portable Oxygen tanks and subsequent regulators). Track location and maintenance records for fluid and syringe pumps. Involved in discussions/decision making when replacing or purchasing equipment. Manage/track any equipment needed for sterilization.
10% - Responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of equipment and stocking of area supplies. Maintain the Anesthesia unit in a state of readiness. Always prepared when the need for CPCR techniques, and emergency therapy arises. Emergency Service: Aiding in the admitting, assessment and emergency stabilization of patients presenting to the emergency service. Take a portion of on call duties as well as duties for emergency response to include ride out duties. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and 4 years of experience; OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology with 4 years experience; OR Certification as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years experience; OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.
Special and Physical Qualifications:
Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and "on-call"/relief shifts.

Essential Personnel - This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.
Required to be capable of lifting 50+ pounds, standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, climbing, crawling, twisting, pushing/pulling, grasping, and squatting.
