ASL/English Interpreter & Curriculum Specialist

Johns Hopkins University seeks a full-time experienced, nationally certified American Sign Language ASL/ English Interpreter & Curriculum Specialist. The Interpreter will serve as a designated interpreter for a faculty member in the Department of Cognitive Science. This position is responsible for daily interpreting services and collaboratively supporting and teaming with other interpreters as well as for developing curriculum and training of the team.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• Provides sign language/English transliterating for on-demand and regularly scheduled meetings, talks, classes, and other functions. Assignments may be a combination of recurring and one-time appointments. There may be occasional travel for conferences and invited talks.
• Adheres to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
• Provides flexibility in scheduling, accommodating occasional evenings and weekends.
• Communicates with appropriate faculty, staff, and students to obtain preparation materials for appointments and shares prep materials with interpreters in a timely manner.
• Supports in the development and maintenance of a highly qualified pool of hourly interpreters for a rigorous academic environment through training and mentoring in concert with the lead interpreter.
• Develops curriculum for the team to foster skills development for work in an academic environment.
• Disseminates curriculum to support onboarding and continued training of the interpreter team.
• Stays current on research of the designated client.
• Stays abreast of best practices in interpreting services and resources.
• Assists with recruitment and screening of casual/hourly interpreters.
• Performs other related work as needed.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of psycholinguistics, linguistics, cognitive science, computer science, or a related field.
  
• Demonstrated ethics training and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  
• Demonstrated evidence of successfully interpreting in a rigorous and fast-paced academic environment.
  
• Demonstrated experience in accomplishing detailed organizational tasks within established deadlines.
  
• Basic computer skills and proficiency.
  
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

• Current national certification as ASL/English Interpreter.
• Have and maintain Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) membership (national) and membership in at least one affiliate chapter of RID.

• Bachelor's Degree in related field.
• American Sign Language (ASL) and English fluency.
• 4 years related interpreting experience, preferably in post-secondary settings.
• Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

• Eight plus years of interpreting experience in post-secondary settings.
• Graduate degree in psycholinguistics, linguistics, cognitive science, computer science, or a related field.
