Position Summary
The Piano Technician will be primarily responsible for tuning the pianos utilized at performances and events in the College of Liberal & Creative Arts facilities. The Piano Technician will make minor adjustments to the tension of a piano's strings, aligning the intervals between their tones so that the instrument is in tune
Position Information
Piano maintenance and troubleshooting
- Assessing the physical status of the piano.
- Evaluate the sound quality by playing the instrument.
- Tuning pianos by tightening or loosening strings with a tuning hammer.
- Conducting post-tuning sound assessments.
- Ensuring the artist is satisfied with the sound quality

- Demonstrate safe work practices for oneself, others, and the office environment.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to tune, regulate and voice a piano to exact specifications; ability to inspect and diagnose problems, and make minor repairs to pianos and related instruments; ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
A thorough knowledge of the principles of design, construction and mechanical operation of pianos; ability to tune, regulate and voice a piano to the exact tonal qualities and touch desired by various individual pianists; and ability to overhaul and rebuild pianos.

Two years of experience in tuning and repairing pianos, harpsichords, and related instruments; as well as two years of experience in overhauling and rebuilding pianos. Completion of a formal training program which provides the individual with the knowledges and abilities required of the position may be substituted for the two years of general tuning and repairing experience.
