The Research Associate II conducts research activities related to scientific projects specifically dealing with molecular, cellular and animal model research, including planning and assisting with data collection, performing skilled technical procedures for cancer research, conducting data analysis, and presenting and disseminating research results in a viewer-friendly manner. This position entails involvement in collaborative projects with other researchers including students, staff, and faculty. They will also provide the general daily, weekly, monthly lab management required by the manager, Dr Hudson. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Perform complex laboratory assignments, including the planning and conducting of projects related to cell culture and molecular biology.
Schedule and perform experiments in research laboratory.
Provide technical advice and instruction to lab members as needed, developing, adapting, and implementing new lab procedures.
Solve problems in scientific and technical execution, interpret experimental data and maintain accurate records.
Design and perform complex and routine molecular biology procedures not limited to but including flow cytometry analysis, PCR, RT-PCR, QT-PCR, Southern, RNA Seq, Western blotting, DNA/RNA extraction, recombinant protein isolation and purification, bacculoviral vector protein production and gene cloning, transfection, in vitro translation and affinity chromatography, microscopy and immunohistochemical staining of tissue sections.
Assist in the preparation of data and figures for manuscripts and for scientific presentations using Power Point, Adobe Illustrator, and other graphics software as needed.
Search literature for references to technical problems and keep informed by reading relevant journal and publications.
Present data in laboratory meeting and at international meetings and other venues. Contribute to publications and training of new members joining the lab.
Work Interactions
The Research Associate 2 position will report to the Principal Investigator (Barry Hudson, Associate Professor) and the employee will work under general supervision of the P.I. The employee’s research duties will have a significant influence on productivity of the environment in the laboratory and will be required to facilitate the timely and effective completion of projects involving cellular, biochemical and animal models research. Through the employee’s successful performance of the tasks associated with this position, the employee will directly contribute to novel, cutting-edge research in areas of human health and clinical significance that align with the overall goals of the Laboratory and the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Requirements and Qualifications
Masters OR 4+ years of relevant work experience in laboratory cancer research
Experience in basic molecular biology, mammalian cell culture
Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work as part of a team and acquire new skills when needed
Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
3+ years laboratory cancer research preferred
