Wildlife Research Technician

The Wildlife Research Technician works with the Wildlife Ecologist to conduct wildlife research, monitoring and management throughout Cleveland Metroparks. This position reports to the Wildlife Ecologist at Mill Stream Run Reservation and works at reservations throughout Cleveland Metroparks. Preference is given to applicants with relevant wildlife experience and enrolled in a university wildlife degree program, or other relevant field of study.
Responsibilities:
- Reviewing and categorizing wildlife camera images using Timelapse or other software.
- Assisting with data analysis and interpretation in preparation of reports.
- Collecting field data independently or with staff, collaborators, and volunteers.
- Surveying and monitoring wildlife (including at night, from a vehicle, and using wildlife
cameras). - Coordinating and supervising volunteer survey crews for research and monitoring.
- Must have completed two years of college courses with relevant course work and/or educational experience in wildlife ecology, wildlife biology or wildlife related field of study. At least six months of field experience, research experience, or other directly relevant job experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. - Ability to read maps, follow written directions, and navigate through forest or wetland areas.
- Experience in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and/or GIS and GPS and associated hardware is desirable
- Ability to walk up to 5 miles daily through challenging terrain including heavy vegetation, wetlands, and steep slopes.
- Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds up to 8 hours per day.
- Ability to work outdoors and tolerate the climate and conditions of natural areas typical of northeast Ohio (including heat, humidity, poison ivy, and biting/stinging insects)
- Energy and enthusiasm for field work.
- Experience and knowledge of natural resource conservation practices and procedures preferred.
- Responsible attitude and work ethic.

- Communicates well and continually updates co-workers and supervisor of progress and problems.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.

- Experience using computers to review and categorize wildlife images.
- Experience with spreadsheet and database software.
- Knowledge of population survey techniques.
- Experience with telemetry, GIS, and GPS software and associated hardware.
- Experience reading aerial photographs and maps.
- Familiarity with Ohio fauna.
