The Senior Principal Engineer will normally plan, conduct, and supervise engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving larger, more critical projects or multiple projects. These projects, by nature of their complexity and difficulty, require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or scientific field. Project work and assignments may be broad in nature, requiring ingenuity and cross-functional coordination. Provides technical assistance within a given area of specialization to solve problems not covered by design standards or otherwise established procedures.
What You Will Do:
- Assists in the development of senior-level-range business plans and related annual operating and capital expense budgets.
- Maintains an active awareness of technical, business, and management developments affecting the present and potential customers and communicates this information promptly to the appropriate senior-level managers.
- Maintains awareness of product/service development needs of ABS and advises the appropriate senior-level managers of market opportunities and technical needs related to specific marine structures.
- Conceives and plans investigations of broad areas of considerable novelty and importance for which engineering precedents are lacking in areas critical to the overall engineering program.
- Initiates and maintains extensive contacts with key engineers and officials of other organizations and companies, requiring skill in persuasion and negotiation of critical issues.
- Recommends facilities, personnel, and funds required to carry out programs that are directly related to and directed toward fulfilling overall company objectives.
- Serves as Account Manager to designated and potential customers and actively promotes the services and capabilities of ABS throughout the business community.
- Ensures the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of all projects within assigned areas of responsibility.
- Develops suggested Rule changes and/or Rule development projects as assigned. Interprets and advises staff in matters related to the application of Rules and Regulations within the project groups.
- Represents the company at conferences and other meetings to resolve important problems and to plan and coordinate work between technology areas.
- Develops working practices and procedures for new areas of technology. Works closely with a senior level Manager with regards to day-to-day activities, as appropriate, such as status/scheduling of work, setting priorities, sales initiatives, etc.
What You Will Need:
Education and Experience
- B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Marine, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred
- Graduate from University and a minimum of 15 years of related industry experience.
- Preference for graduates from a marine-industry-recognized college or university.
- Experience in international business and technical processes, as well as international requirements and problem resolution, is necessary.
- International experience or knowledge of international business and related technical processes, requirements, and problem-solving skills.
For those with Hull backgrounds
- B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred.
- Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software.
- Exposed to the Finite Element Method (coursework or supervised research).
For those with Machinery backgrounds
- B.S. degree in Marine, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Internal candidates should have a minimum of three years of experience working as an ABS Senior Principal Engineer or Managing Principal Engineer.
- Ability to gain exceptional understanding and comprehension of ABS' strategic, technical, and business positioning in the marine industry.
- Significant project and team leadership experience and training in the specialization.
- The knowledge and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, concerning technical issues to laymen and experts.
- The human relations skills necessary to organize, direct and motivate entry, mid-, and senior-level professionals. These skills are also necessary to develop strong client relationships at the highest levels.
- Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.
