About the role

At Nautilus, we have a big and important mission: improve the health of millions by unleashing the potential of the proteome to accelerate drug development and enable a new world of precision and personalized medicine. We are developing a single-molecule protein analysis platform of unprecedented sensitivity, scale, and ease of use that we believe will democratize access to the proteome – one of the most dynamic and valuable sources of biological insight. To accomplish this, we are pursuing deep, hard science with an entrepreneurial mindset and creating a world-class team of builders, innovators, and dreamers across a wide range of disciplines. We are looking for a Senior Test Engineer to join our growing team.  This is an exciting role that will collaborate with a cross-functional team of scientists and engineers to develop and commercialize the world’s first single molecule protein analysis instrument.

Responsibilities

  • Develop subsystem and system level test strategy; responsible for a broad range of instrument testing, including evaluation of electro-mechanical, fluidic, thermal, and optical subsystems, on an ambitious schedule, through all phases of development and commercialization
  • Hardware design and coding/scripting of controls for feasibility, characterization, design verification, reliability, lifetime, manufacturing, and service test fixtures
  • Closely collaborates with systems, electrical, optical, optomechanical, and fluidic engineers to define requirements and criteria for system and subsystem tests
  • Creates meaningful, appropriately sensitive, and repeatable test plans
  • Designs and qualifies test fixtures, tests system/subsystem prototypes, and documents results
  • Supports design decisions with clearly documented and compelling engineering analysis
  • Identifies simple solutions to subtle, challenging, and complex problems
  • Provides documentation and training for the transfer of design, assembly, alignment, and troubleshooting of test fixtures to Manufacturing and Service
  • Works with internal and external parties to perform and pass regulatory tests
  • Identifies, tracks, and isolates root cause of issues and implements permanent corrective actions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an engineering field and 6-10+ years of experience, or PhD and some industry experience
  • 3+ years of relevant experience with the above responsibilities
  • Experience with designing and controlling fixtures to test similar, successfully commercialized scientific/medical instrument products
  • Experience with testing systems involving precision alignment, motion control, optics, mechanisms, automated pipetting, fluidics through channels/tubing, and thermal control
  • Proficient with SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software
  • Good working knowledge of GD&T/ASME Y14.5 and experience releasing 2D drawings
  • Experience programming controls and scripts in Python, LabView or equivalent
  • Able to design controls of systems using Arduino or equivalent is a major plus
  • Experience with defining appropriate tests at subsystem levels to predict top-level system lifetime and reliability (MTBF) is a plus
  • Expertise using formal Six Sigma DOE to minimize test time and maximize the number of variables that can be tested at one time is a plus
  • Skilled at using, modeling, risk, tradeoff, engineering, and design analyses (e.g., tolerance, error budget, FEA, CDF, and vibration) to minimize design iterations is a plus
  • Strong concept development and hands-on prototyping skills
  • Machine shop experience is preferred
  • Works independently, self-driven, and skilled at effective, proactive communication
  • Enthusiastic, dedicated, engaging, and persuasive

Nautilus Team Culture

  • We are curious go-getters: this is a team of life-long learners who aren’t afraid to tackle the big challenges and we embrace the journey
